DTS Delivers Outstanding Audio as a Key Mobile Device Differentiator

28 February 2012DTS, a leader in high-definition audio, will showcase state-of-the-art audio solutions at Mobile World Congress 2012. Visitors to the show will enjoy an array of exhibits showcasing high-quality audio technology demonstrations and previews, with the opportunity to learn about DTS’ latest industry partnerships. Additionally, attendees will experience first-hand how today’s devices – from on-the-go mobile to connected TV platforms – rely on DTS audio solutions to deliver an enriched audio experience.

With phones and tablets increasingly used to consume high-definition media, consumers have begun to demand superior audio to match high-quality video. A recent survey* by YouGov shows that 74% of respondents were convinced that DTS sounds better than today’s typical audio experience. Furthermore, almost half (49%) of those surveyed indicated that highest quality sound is an important factor, with 36% willing to pay for a downloadable application significantly improving the audio experience.

The ability to provide rich, immersive sound is being seen as a powerful tool to differentiate smartphone products in an increasingly competitive market. At the Consumer Electronics Show last month, DTS was named a CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Award Honoree for its audio technology integration into the T-Mobile G2x™ with Google™ smartphone by LG. DTS high-performance audio technology has also been integrated into Huawei and Pantech mobile devices.

DTS mobile audio solutions deliver a richer, warmer and more engaging audio experience for consumers who are increasingly experience HD quality video at home and a lacklustre audio performance on phones and tablets. In addition, DTS audio solutions maximise the mobile device’s acoustic power for more robust volume levels without distorting or altering the integrity of the sound quality. The result is a more realistic, immersive audio experience whether listening to music, watching TV or playing games on portable devices.

“We passionately believe that sound matters, particularly in mobile devices where for so long the audio experience has been overlooked as manufacturers delivered sleeker devices with bigger and brighter screens”, said Darragh Ballesty, Director of Business Development and Content at DTS. “It is ironic that a device that was originally designed to enable us to better communicate, has evolved to a primary consumption device for all media. Consumers and the industry at large often overlook how audio can turn an ordinary experience into a more exciting and engaging one, but we’ve seen a clear mind shift in user behaviour and expectations over the past two years with almost 8 out of 10 (79%) agreeing that sound has the power to change our emotions and one in three consumers stating that they would be willing to pay for a better sound experience. We’re delighted to be collaborating with key players in the mobile industry such as T-Mobile, LG, Pantech and Huawei, as they begin deliver truly differentiated product offerings through sound. As a leader in high-definition audio, DTS provides audio solutions across multiple platforms and we are committed to driving audio innovation in the mobile category”.

*All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.  Total sample size was 2114 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 17th – 20th February 2012.  The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).

Respondents were asked to listen to two clips and state which clip offered better quality of sound. Results are based on respondents listening with over the ear headphones or speakers.
