EBC launched its new TV infrastructure

In September 2013, following a call for tender, BCE was selected by EBC (previously ERTA) for the upgrade of theirinfrastructure to a high definition (HD) and tapeless facility in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Taking a step into the future, EBCis now the first Ethiopian media organisation with a state-of-the-art digital workflow.

The EBC was created in 1995 (previously named ERTA) as the result of the merge between the Ethiopian Radio and the ETV (Ethiopian Television). Ethiopian Radio was launched in 1935 and ETV in 1964. ERTA broadcasts their news and other programs nationwide and overseas through radio, television and the Internet.

“Following our strategy to offer our services to the MENA market, BCE has committed to installing state-of-the-artplatforms to media customers using its expertise and its trusted supplier’s network. This major evolution of theirinfrastructure will drive the company to a leading position on the Ethiopian media market”, comments Frédéric Fievez,Manager Special Projects at BCE.

After a call for tender, BCE, inpartnership with Grass Valley®, wasselected for the integration of thisinfrastructure. BCE, thanks to itsstrong experience in mass contentdigitisation for important Europeanmedia players as well as internationalcontent producers and TVchannels, was able to answerrapidly to their demand. BCE’sexperts were able to install theplatform and also train EBC staff towork in this new environment.

“In collaboration with Grass Valley, BCE took its first major step in Africa. Thanks to an off-site pre-installation in Luxembourg, our team succeededin seamlessly delivering, in a cost-effective way, a high-achieving platformto EBC.” commented Frédéric Lemaire, CEO of BCE.

Taking advantage of its strong infrastructurein Luxembourg, withextended room for projects, BCEdecided to install the completeplatform of the customer in Luxembourgin order to prepare it for thelocal team.During this first integration inLuxembourg, EBC’s team came toLuxembourg to be trained directlyon their new platform. The platform was then moved toEthiopia where BCE’s expertsteamed up with the local architectsand EBC’s team to reassemble theparts of the pre-configured platform. The local team finished their trainingon site as well with BCE experts.

Meanwhile a large volume of EBC legacy content was digitised by BCE.Less than a year after the beginningof the work, the new platform wasready. To ensure a seamless start,BCE provided assistance during thelaunch and the first weeks of operations.

“The work of BCE exceeded all EBC’s expectations” commented EBC.
