ECI Telecom and NeoPhotonics Announce Use Of Ultra Low Loss PLC ROADMs In ECI Telecom’s XDMR Optical Platforms

New Ultra Low Loss ROADM Meets the Requirements for 40 Gbps Operation in Next Gen Metro and Long-Haul Networks Brussels – September 23, 2008 – NeoPhotonics and ECI Telecom today announced here at the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC 2008) that NeoPhotonics’ new Ultra-Low Loss Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) modules are being used in ECI Telecom’s XDMR Optical Networking Platform. The Ultra-Low Loss ROADM incorporates NeoPhotonics’ advanced planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology to significantly reduce the insertion loss and increase the pass band, thus meeting the requirements for next generation 40 Gbps optical transmission systems. “NeoPhotonics’ ultra low insertion loss and wide passband PLC ROADM, complementing ECI’s existing WSS ROADM, has enabled us to meet and surpass performance goals for next generation optical platforms, which we are now deploying in metro and long-haul networks around the world,” said Oren Marmur, Vice President, Optical Networking Line of Business of ECI Telecom. “In line with ECI’s 1Net, a comprehensive framework focused on the optimized transition to next-generation networks, NeoPhotonics’ PLC ROADM helped us achieve greater flexibility and cost-effectiveness, while guaranteeing compatibility with future 40 Gbps operations.” “NeoPhotonics is very pleased to announce that ECI Telecom is a lead customer for our new ultra low loss ROADM modules,” commented Tim Jenks, CEO of NeoPhotonics. “ECI is widely recognized as a leading innovator in next generation optical networks and we feel that the advanced performance of our new ROADM modules will be a good fit for ECI’s architecture.” “The incorporation of NeoPhotonics’ ultra low loss DWDM MUX/DMUX into the popular ROADM configuration we are currently shipping lowers insertion loss by more than 2 dB, significantly decreases ripple and increases the pass band by >50%, which are critical parameters in cascaded and 40 Gbps DWDM architectures,” said Ferris Lipscomb, V. P. of Marketing at NeoPhotonics. “NeoPhotonics’ ultra low loss ROADM is suitable for any of the popular 40 Gbps coding schemes and can be used in architectures which cascade up to 16 nodes.” NeoPhotonics’ new ROADM module builds upon the success of NeoPhotonics’ extensive line of Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) products, including Arrayed Wavelength Gratings (AWGs) and Variable Optical Multiplexers (VMUXs). First shipped nine years ago, these products have been embraced by customers around the globe and have accumulated more than 300 million device hours in the field. NeoPhotonics is showcasing here at ECOC, in booth 30, the industry’s most complete portfolio of MEMS and PLC based optical solutions, its extensive portfolio of GPON and GEPON transceivers for FTTH applications and its broad line of telecom transceiver products in SFF, SFP and XFP form factors.
