ELCON’s Remote Powering System optimizes operators fibre roll-outs and improves time-to-market

ELCONs Remote Powering System (RPS 1600) offers a unique chance to optimize energy distribution, while boosting bandwidth and speed of access networks with fibre.

· ELCONs RPS 1600 enables access network operators to save up to 40% of their fibre roll out costs for power provisioning as well as operations

· Independency from local power utilities improves roll out times for FTTX and Small Cells networks

· By reusing the existing copper plant, a defined power output of up to 15 Watts can be guaranteed over 6 km cable length on a copper twisted pair

· High-energy efficiency of more than 90% on the remote site

The increasing demand for higher bandwidth and faster internet connections force network operators to permanently optimize and redesign their networks. To fulfil these end-user demands, fibre needs to be rolled out in access networks and terminated much closer to the end-customer. In fixed networks fibre is deployed to the Curb (FTTC), to a remote network note (FTTN) or a distribution point close to the building (FTTdp). In all scenarios the fibre will be terminated in a remote location and active equipment requiring that powering needs to be installed. In mobile networks the number of cells is permanently increasing to improve network performance with the limited available spectrum. For this reason leading mobile operators are starting to roll out “small cells” or “HetNets” (heterogenic networks). This results in more “small cell” sites being built, which require local powering.

The operation and maintenance of powering systems in access networks will be in future more complex and costly. In addition, the roll out times are increasing because the coordination with multiple local power utilities in these distributed networks becomes a challenge. To continuously ensure service during power outages many of the new sites need battery backup systems, which result in high investments and operational costs.

This means a big challenge for Network Operators who have hard times to plan those investments ensuring a return of investment in short time. ELCON’s new Remote Powering System (RPS) is helping operators to overcome these challenges. ELCON has a long-lasting experience with Remote Power Feeding technologies in networks of leading operators.

“The increasing demand for more fibre in access networks is on one hand a big challenge for many operators, but offers also the chance to optimize the power distribution in more and more complex access network topologies in the long run. With a centralized power distribution, the operational costs can be managed much more efficiently and major cost savings can be realized”, says Werner Neubauer, CEO of ELCON.
