Elon Musk warns Tucker Carlson of the dangers of AI as Tesla self-driving AI fatally collides with emergency vehicle – Statement from The Dawn Project

by Anthony Weaver

This follows the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
today releasing data that reveals that Tesla Full Self-Driving was
involved in yet another fatal crash with an emergency vehicle in San
Francisco.

Excerpts of the interview released by FOX reveal that Elon will tell
Tucker that AI is more dangerous than “bad car production”, and that
artificial intelligence “has the potential of civilizational
destruction.”

The Dawn Project, a safety advocacy group established in 2021 with the
aim of combating unsafe software, today called on NHTSA to immediately
disable Full Self-Driving until Tesla can conclusively prove that the
software is safe for public roads.

Dan O’Dowd [2], Founder of The Dawn Project, and the father of
unhackable software, strongly condemned Tesla’s recklessness and
regulators’ inaction. Dan also warns of the dangers of artificial
intelligence, and cautioned that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving AI is the
only AI system that poses a clear and present danger to public safety.

Dan O’Dowd, Founder of The Dawn Project, commented:_”Elon Musk will tell
Tucker Carlson and the world tonight that AI could destroy civilisation,
and is more dangerous than bad car production, and yet Tesla has
deployed more than 400,000 vehicles run by its dangerously flawed Full
Self-Driving AI system on our public roads._

_”The AI that Tesla has deployed is the only one that has shown a
propensity to kill people. Tesla Full Self-Driving’s AI does not
properly value human life. It regularly swerves into oncoming traffic.
Even today, we hear about another victim of Tesla’s defective
self-driving AI, which collided with an emergency vehicle and caused yet
another fatality._

_”Elon’s assertions that he is the person to fix this are blatantly
hypocritical, considering that Tesla is the only company that has
unleashed two ton AI-powered killer robots onto our public roads via its
Full Self-Driving software._

_”Currently, there is no other AI system with anywhere near the
magnitude of Tesla Full Self-Driving AI’s lethal effects._

_”If Tesla’s Full Self-Driving AI went rogue, or was hacked, and told
the 400,000 cars running the software to drive on the wrong side of road
it could kill millions, and yet it has been released onto our public
roads without any regulatory oversight._

_”The Dawn Project alerted Tesla, NHTSA and the public to the dangers of
Tesla Full Self-Driving AI eight months ago. Rather than fix the issues
we addressed, Tesla attempted to suppress the results of our safety
tests with legal action._

_”There have now been 718 crashes involving Tesla’s self-driving AI
systems since reporting began in 2021, with 17 confirmed fatalities to
date – though the actual figure is likely much higher than this._

_”How many more innocent people have to die before NHTSA takes action to
remove Tesla’s dangerous Full Self-Driving AI software from our roads?_

_”Elon is entirely correct that artificial intelligence must be treated
with caution, but his suggestion that he can develop a safe system by
teaching it that humans are “interesting” is simply absurd. Any advanced
AI system might recognise the damage humans are causing to the planet
and its other inhabitants, and might seek to wipe us out._

_”Elon Musk’s long history of erratic behavior and shipping unsafe
products in the pursuit of profit demonstrate that he is clearly the
wrong person to be trusted at such a critical junction in the
development of safety-critical artificial intelligence._

_”Will Elon Musk pause Tesla’s Full Self-Driving AI development for six
monhs, like he has demanded of his competitors, or do his rules apply
everybody but him?”

Dan O’Dowd’s comments refer to the results of safety tests [3] conducted
by The Dawn Project which revealed a litany of critical safety defects
present in the software. In February, The Dawn Project broadcasted a
Super Bowl ad containing footage of the tests across the United States,
which can be viewed here [4].

In August 2022, after The Dawn Project first revealed that Tesla Full
Self-Driving would run down a child in the road, Tesla issued a cease
and desist letter to the group, which can be read here [5].

Dan O’Dowd [2] is an entrepreneur and CEO with over 40 years’ experience
in designing and writing secure, safety-critical software. Dan has built
operating systems for the U.S. military’s fighter jets and some of the
world’s most trusted organizations such as NASA, Boeing, and Airbus.

In 2021 Dan O’Dowd founded The Dawn Project [1], which campaigns to
ensure all software in safety-critical infrastructure is secure and to
make computers safe for humanity. The first danger The Dawn Project is
tackling is Elon Musk’s reckless deployment of unsafe Full Self-Driving
cars on our roads.
