Emerson Network Power Helps Telcos Control Costs with Expansion of DC Power System Retrofit Portfolio

New NetSure™ retrofit solutions for ACTURA™ systems deliver increased reliability and efficiency

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia [April 18, 2013] – Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and a global leader in maximizing reliability, deployment speed and operational efficiency for communications networks, is meeting demands for tighter fiscal controls in the telecom industry by growing its family of retrofit solutions. The most recent addition to the DC Power Retrofit Program for full global rollout is a retrofit program for ACTURA™ power systems. The NetSure™ 701 Retrofit solution enables operators to onboard new technology on existing infrastructure, thus significantly improving system power reliability, efficiency and onsite as well as remote monitoring and control possibilities, at a fraction of the cost of a new system.

As the current financial climate forces more and more organizations to identify new means of leveraging Capex and reducing Opex, Emerson’s NetSure 701 Retrofit program is proving to be the optimal solution for many operators.

The concept was initially launched in 2007 and enables customers to retrofit legacy DC power systems, gaining all the benefits of a new system, at a considerably reduced cost. The retrofit can be done on a live system with very low risk compared to a complete system change out. The retrofit technique works on legacy Emerson systems globally and can also be adapted to other manufacturers systems.

The upgrade, which is readily available for Emerson -48V DC power systems, utilizes existing cabinets and distribution cabling. The legacy rectifiers are replaced with more dense, powerful and more energy efficient NetSure or eSure™ rectifiers. These rectifiers take up a quarter of a cabinet compared to legacy rectifiers, allowing space for further capacity, additional distribution or other equipment.

“Innovation is part and parcel of the telecom business, but rapid adoption of technology has sometimes meant equally rapid infrastructure upgrades that render existing systems obsolete,” said Danny Wong, energy system solutions director for Emerson Network Power in Asia. “Our DC Power Retrofit Program increases the functionality of legacy products, reducing power losses up to 80%. And because the upgrade works within existing systems, infrastructural risks and incidences of downtime are minimal.”

The retrofit program, which includes NetSure and eSure rectifier technology and Emerson’s Advanced Control Unit (ACU+), offers a number of other benefits. These include advanced battery management, remote monitoring, including operational and diagnostic reports and statistics, remote service and maintenance and remote software upgrades. With these functions Emerson engineers can ensure systems continue to operate at peak efficiency without the need for onsite visits.

“Retrofitting is a good option when efficiency and stranded capacity are the major issues. This option has advantages over an entirely new build-out, cost being at the top of the list. Retrofitting is much less intrusive than replacing entire systems and their payback is typically about two years. With rising demand among telco subscribers for quality, reliable service, periodic upgrades of this nature will keep telco operators competitive,” said Wong.
