Ericsson delivers new approach to linear multi-screen TV

September 2, 2011

  • IBC launch of most powerful and flexible solution for the growing multi-screen market
  • Enables TV service providers to meet consumer demand for delivering entire linear TV line-up to multi-screen devices
  • Based on primary ConsumerLab research confirming strong desire for linear TV

As the industry increasingly embraces the opportunity to satisfy consumer demand for TV content on any device, anywhere, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has announced the launch of an additional, critical enabler for the success of Multi-screen TV.

The solution, launched at IBC 2011, Amsterdam, September 9-13 (booth 1.D61), combines hardware and software to provide the most powerful and flexible approach to the growing multi-screen market. TV service providers and content owners are becoming aware of the scale of the processing capabilities needed to deliver their entire channel line-up to multi-screen devices to meet high customer interest.  Ericsson’s solution critically enables the massive expansion in processing needed to deliver a multi-screen offering. It offers unmatched levels of density, scalability and cost effectiveness, changing the landscape for linear multi-screen TV processing.

“When you look at today’s multi-screen TV offerings, it is clear that TV service providers are challenged by the scalability necessary to validate the various business models,” said Dr. Giles Wilson, Head of Technology, Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “Our new additions to the Multi-platform Stream Processor family uniquely provide operators with a truly next generation platform for delivering linear content to every new device of the future, enabling TV service providers to meet increasingly high demands for quality and video resolution.”

Ericsson’s ConsumerLab research shows that 93% of consumers still watch linear TV and will continue to do so. The expectation by consumers for multi-screen TV is that all of their content choices available in the home on the large screen will also be available on every screen.

The Ericsson solution enables high quality and cost effective processing of hundreds of channels into thousands of adaptive streaming profiles. The Ericsson SPR1200 Multiscreen Stream Processor, a true hardware approach to Multi-screen compression, is combined with the Ericsson NPR1200 Multiscreen Network Processor, a dense software-based adaptive streaming segmentation and encryption processor, designed to track dynamic updates in adaptive streaming formats and DRM systems associated with the needs of delivery to different types of devices, as well as supporting an array of deployment architectures and formats.

This latest solution is part of an award winning solution set for multi-screen TV, comprising management, processing, and delivery of linear and on-demand content to all devices, enhanced with the most unique middleware and back office capabilities to provide an intuitive and blended user experience that includes social interaction, search, discovery, and sharing.
