Ericsson LTE Broadcast solution scoops third award in four months

Wins ‘Best mobile TV technology or service’ at CSI Awards 2013

Recognition by telecom and broadcast industries of the impact LTE will have on enabling true TV Anywhere services on all devices

CSI Awards honor Ericsson’s outstanding innovation in the global broadcast industry

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced that it has won a CSI Award for its end-to-end LTE Broadcast solution, receiving ‘Best mobile TV technology or service’ at an awards ceremony at IBC 2013 in Amsterdam. This award marks the third win for Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution in the last four months, following its Connected TV Award for ‘Outstanding Technology Innovation’ and its win for ‘Most Innovative LTE Application or Service’ at the LTE World Summit.

Ericsson’s Mobility report, published in June 2013, shows that video traffic in mobile networks is expected to grow by around 60 percent annually through to 2018. As this growth in demand for video and TV services over cellular networks increases, Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution enables network operators to capitalize on high-speed wireless Mobile Broadband networks and provide high quality video delivery with assured quality of experience to even more connected devices. In turn, content industries are able to partner with LTE network operators to drive richer content and brand experiences to delight consumers, while building real commercial value.

Ove Anebygd, Vice President and Head of Solution Area Media, Ericsson said: “We are very pleased that Ericsson’s leadership in LTE Broadcast has once again been recognized. Together with leading industry partners we have been driving standardization and development of the LTE broadcast ecosystem. Ericsson’s solution will enable commercial deployment of premium entertainment video services over LTE for the mass market, allowing operators to drive new revenue streams, partner top brands and content owners and meet the increasingly high demands on exceptional video experiences from consumers.”

Launched at Mobile World Congress in February this year, Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution consists of three new technology standards: eMBMS (Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) and MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP [DASH]). The standards combine to transform the video experience, offering the highest quality broadcast video over LTE networks and enabling service providers to maximize the use of the existing spectrum and networks, both dynamically and efficiently. LTE Broadcast has many potential business uses from digital video, digital signage and data delivery. Today, leading LTE mobile operators are trialing the technology and use cases to explore the business potential.

The CSI Awards are designed to reward technical and product marketing excellence in the cable, satellite, terrestrial broadcasting, mobile and IPTV sectors.
