Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has launched mobile data services in the Falkland Islands.

Cable & Wireless Falkland Islands has launched 2.5G (GPRS EDGE) mobile data services enabling local customers to access the internet and send and receive e-mails and multimedia messages on mobile phones for the first time.

Both prepay and postpay customers will be able to access the new services.

CWC reported 82% growth in mobile data revenue across its Group in the 2011/12 financial year, accounting for 21% of the company’s mobile service revenues.

The Falkland Islands lie in the South Atlantic Ocean and have a population of around 3,000. Cable & Wireless Communications is the sole provider of telecommunications for the islands, delivering mobile, fixed line and broadband services.

What is 2.5 G?

Mobile phones have been through several generations of development.

The introduction of basic data services (predominantly text messaging) was called second generation (2G).

EDGE networks (2.5G) provide faster connectivity to enable usage of mobile internet.
