A Smarter London Together: Developing a New Plan for Digital Change,
Tuesday 27 February 2018, 10 St Bride Street, London
Theo Blackwell, the Mayor of London’s new Chief Digital Officer for London wants to keep our lead in data and innovation. He is doing this with the Mayor’s Smart London Board, advisory group of experts and leaders in data and digital technologies. Together, they have started a Listening Exercise for a new Smart London Plan, which they will launch at London Tech Week in June.
The Mayor is asking the tech community, citizens and practitioners what can be done to ensure better digital collaboration across London’s boroughs and public services, better data-sharing, improved connectivity and digital skills, and to ensure that technology is designed around citizens’ needs.

As well as asking what steps can we take to shape delivery so London can become be the global home to data innovation and artificial intelligence to boost growth and help make London a better place to live, work and visit.
techUK is delighted to host Theo Blackwell as part of this Listening Exercise to gather views and case studies on how to approach city-growth pressures with data and digital technologies, and shape plans.

Adax launches new DTLS module to tackle network eavesdropping and tampering
With today’s ever-growing concern of network security and the need for privacy, Adax, the industry leader in high performance signaling and packet processing for network infrastructure, has launched the Adax DTLS. The company’s latest solution runs over the Adax SCTP/T as an optional module that provides communications privacy for client and server applications to prevent eavesdropping and detect tampering or message forgery.
As the number of subscribers and connected devices continues to grow with the rise of IoT networks, the demand for secure, reliable, robust and high performing networks to support them needs to be met. The Adax DTLS, in conjunction with the Adax SCTP/T, addresses these issues while maintaining service and data delivery, and thwarting malicious intent.
Applications using the new DTLS module can use all the transport features provided by the SCTP/T protocol and its extensions. This is critical for Diameter where RFC 6733 states all Diameter base protocol implementations must support the use of DTLS/SCTP.
Social networks may lend legitimacy to cryptocurrency market – ET CIO
Despite hogging headlines everyday the cryptocurrency market is yet to make much progress towards becoming a mainstream currency. However, the foray of social networks/messaging providers may give some legitimacy to this market, says leading data and analytics company GlobalData.
With subscriber growth and active users continuing to be a cornerstone of monetization, social networks/messaging providers are finding that the traditional road to growth and revenue is bumpy due to geographical preferences and lack of scale compared to a behemoth like Facebook.
As a result, social networks/messaging providers are embarking on some very non-traditional strategies including cryptocurrencies for revenue and product enhancements. They hope that cryptocurrencies will create self-sustaining economies that might even one day exceed the value of advertising or value-add services.
SatADSL leverages the cloud to enable new innovative business models for MNOs in Africa
SatADSL, a provider of professional VSAT services via satellite, today announced an innovative new service for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) which will enable them to deliver satellite-based connectivity without investment in physical infrastructure.
Utilizing SatADSL’s multi-band, technology-agnostic Cloud-based Service Delivery Platform (C-SDP), the solution allows MNOs to easily outsource their satellite services by providing, via the cloud, a complete OSS/BSS, carrier-grade, fully redundant platform. Initially, the offering will target MNOs in Africa, where terrestrial infrastructure remains limited due to vast rural areas.

88% of IT leaders unable to deliver on organisation’s need for business agility
A survey of senior IT decision-makers in large enterprises, commissioned by Coeus Consulting, found that IT leaders who can clearly demonstrate the cost and value of IT have greater influence over the strategic direction of the company and are best positioned to deliver business agility for digital transformation. Consequently, cost transparency leaders are twice as likely to be represented at board level and thus are better prepared for external challenges such as changing consumer demand, GDPR and Brexit.
The survey of organisations with revenues of between £200m and £30bn revealed the importance of cost transparency within IT when it comes to forward planning and defining business strategy. Based on the responses of senior decision-makers (more than half of whom are C-level), the report identifies a small group of Cost Transparency Leaders who indicated that their departments: work with the rest of the organisation to provide accurate cost information; ensure that services are fully costed; and manage the cost life cycle.
88% of respondents were unable to indicate that they can demonstrate cost transparency to the rest of the organisation.

NBC Olympics Selects Ericsson for its Production of 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang
NBC Olympics, a division of the NBC Sports Group, has selected Ericsson to provide video contribution solutions for its production of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, which take place in PyeongChang, South Korea, from February 8 – February 25. The announcement was made today by Christopher Connolly, Sr. Director of Transmission Engineering and Operations and Angel Ruiz, Head of Media Solutions, Ericsson.
Ericsson will provide a range of its leading encoding and satellite receiver technologies to support NBC Olympics video distribution to millions of viewers. Ericsson’s specialist engineers will assist with the equipment and system set up, and will also be on site 24/7 to provide multi-site support throughout the event.
Ericsson’s award-winning encoding solutions provide the highest video processing and broadcast performance in the industry, and offer the ultimate in decode efficiency for all video formats. The Ericsson media processing platform will deliver the valuable, high quality HD content over a combination of both fiber and satellite.
Ultra-high speed Wi-Fi developed for Seoul’s subway trains
A mobile hotspot network will enable riders on fast-moving trains to stream HD videos without interruption while underground, thanks in part to a newly-developed mmWave wireless backhaul technology. The first commercial service using this technology will debut later this year.
A mobile hot-spot network featuring an extremely fast 1.25 Gbps data transmission has been developed for public transportation systems by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea. A pilot project featuring the new technology in Seoul’s subway lines will begin later this year.
The network is able to provide ultra-fast internet service in high-speed trains by combining two technologies. First, the network transmits data using millimeter waves with a frequency over 20 GHz, which enable data transmission 100 times faster than existing WiBro backhaul networks. Backhaul networks work as intermediaries, linking receivers on the trains with the public Internet, via radio towers along the tracks. The second key part is a fast hand-over technology that seamlessly transfers data transmission from one base station to another; no delay or disconnection like those experienced when a video freezes or a cell phone call is dropped when transitioning between service towers.
“The mobile hot-spot network (MHN) technology can provide high-speed Wi-Fi services even in a fast running subway train, just like home Wi-Fi,” said Hyun Kyu Chung, the president of ETRI’s 5G Giga Service Research Laboratory. “Our technology will provide the world’s first commercial service using millimeter waves as a moving wireless backhaul for subways.”

Nokia and Qualcomm complete key foundation tests of 5G New Radio network and devices
Oulu, Finland/San Diego, CA – Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, have successfully completed interoperability testing in the 3.5Ghz and 28Ghz spectrum compliant with the global 3GPP 5G NR Release 15 standard – which was formally confirmed in December – and using the commercially available Nokia AirScale base station and device prototypes from Qualcomm Technologies.
Focusing on the commercialization of 5G technology, with New Radio as its foundation, Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies testing at Nokia’s 5G center of excellence in Oulu, Finland, will provide the basis for 5G NR field trials with operators in 2018. Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies and operators* including BT/EE, Deutsche Telekom, Elisa, KT, LGU+, NTT DOCOMO, Optus, SKT, Telia and Vodafone Group are already committed to working together in verifying and trialing 5G NR technology. This will be based on the successful interoperability tests of the flexible 5G NR interface from Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies which will support a wide array of 5G services and various deployment scenarios.
In line with Qualcomm Technologies’ and Nokia’s announcement in September 2017 to collaborate on 5G NR and with the success of these recent tests, Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies continue working closely in driving the industry, leading to widescale 5G deployments in 2019 based on 3GPP standard-compliant 5G infrastructure and devices. This will enable timely commercial network launches in 2019, in particular in the United States, China, Japan, Korea and Europe.
