Fiber Optic Sensors Monthly Market/Technology Summaries

Upper Lake, CA (USA) – June 6, 2011  — ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market/technology forecast consultancy, today announced the release of a new premium service to its standard annual Fiber Optic Sensors Global Market Forecast and Analysis, which is published every September. The new service provides a journal, which is published the first-week of each month.

“This is the ElectroniCast journal providing a review and analysis of current market and technology trends relative to the consumption of communication-based fiber optic sensors used.  The journal (PDF file: typically 30-40 pages per month) provides our clients with insights to the innovative applications of fiber optic sensors,” said Theresa Hosking, vice president – Marketing/Sales at ElectroniCast Consultants.

In the June journal, ElectroniCast released summary-level data of its preliminary 2011 market forecast of the worldwide use of fiber optic sensors in communication applications.

The journal presents and segments pertinent information in three sensor segments:

·        Continuous Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor Systems

·        Fiber Optic Point Sensors (also know as fiber optic Local sensors)

·        Optical Communication Signal Analysis Interface Components/Modules

Fiber optic sensors used in continuous distributed systems:  “During the 2010-2015 timeline, we forecast that the consumption value will grow at an average annual rate of 43.94%. The Europe, Middle East, Africa region (EMEA) led in relative market share, driven by the Aircraft and Petrochemical industry sectors,” said Stephen Montgomery, president- International Business at ElectroniCast.

“The American region is currently holding the second-place position in continuous distributed systems market share; however, growing at a faster pace versus the EMEA region, driven aggressively by the Military and Security industry sectors, as well as the Civil Engineering/Construction sectors. The consumption value in the APAC region is forecast to increase at an average annual growth rate of nearly 50% (2010-2015),” Montgomery added.

In regards to Point sensors, ElectroniCast count each Point sensor as one unit; however, the volume (quantity) of continuous distributed fiber optic systems is based on the entire system.  Since a continuous distributed fiber optic system may have 100s of sensing element in a continuous-line, it is important to note that all of those sensing units in a continuous distributed system as one (system) unit.

A Continuous Distributed fiber optic sensor system involves the optic fiber with the sensors embedded with the fiber, plus electronics, connectors, data acquisition module, software, and miscellaneous components; however, ElectroniCast quantifies the optical fiber, cable (fiber jacket) and the sensor elements in this forecast data (only).

The Petrochemical/ Energy sector is forecast to eventually slip into the second-place market share position, as the Military/Aerospace/Security application category grabs the lead.  The Civil Engineering/ Construction sector, which includes continuous fiber sensors used in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) as well as other concerns in buildings, bridges, tunnels, towers, and other structures, is also forecast for strong growth.

Inspection and quality control frequently constitute the largest portion of production costs for many industries. There is a growing need for improved measurement solutions, which offer higher precision, speed and accuracy and provide better in-process measurement of moving objects, resulting in lower costs for better products.  The Manufacturing/ Factory segment, led by the APAC region is forecast to double (2x) in terms of consumption value.

The Biomedical/ Science sector is a relatively small user, in terms of consumption value, since the average selling prices for the distributed continuous fiber optic sensors is low compared to the large (more expensive) distributed continuous fiber optic sensor systems used in other applications.
