Intelsat and Vodacom Deliver High Performance Broadband Connectivity to the Sub-Saharan African SOHO & SME Markets‏

Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of satellite services, and telecommunications group, Vodacom (JSE: VOD), today announced an agreement under which Intelsat will provide a managed broadband service to Vodacom. The solution will strongly position Vodacom to offer a differentiated broadband service targeting the small office/home office (SOHO) and small/medium enterprise (SME) users across sub-Saharan Africa.

ITU drives global effort to strengthen cybersecurity‏

ITU presented the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), a unique initiative launched by ITU and ABI Research to measure the levels of cybersecurity in countries, at a forum held in Dubai today. It underlies ITU’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and plugging the gaps worldwide while building capacity at the national level, particularly in developing countries.

TeleCommunication Systems Selected by U.S. Department of Homeland Security to Research Improvements in Geo-targeting Accuracy for Wireless Emergency Alerts

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) has selected TCS to perform the first phase of its research study: Constructing Algorithms that Utilize RF Cell Site Propagation Footprints for Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The study focuses on using the area footprints associated with radio frequency (RF) coverage to improve geo-targeting granularity and accuracy for delivery of WEA messages.

Smell the Coffee with the Next Wave of the Internet‏

Experts have plenty of ideas about what will constitute the next wave of the Internet and mobile communications. But in the ‘Pervasive Computing’ department of City University London in the UK, Professor Adrian Cheok and his team are certain this will involve a fuller sensory experience – involving smell, taste and touch.

It is a future that is already starting to take shape. In late January, Professor Cheok took his department’s technology to the world-renowned Madrid Fusion culinary festival in Spain, where he unveiled a mobile device and app combination – Scentee – which is capable of emitting food flavors. The technology, developed with a partner in Japan, is believed to be a world first.

Because of the context of the launch, the emphasis at the Madrid festival was the potential for chefs to showcase more of what they do to potential customers – above and beyond photos of their dishes which rarely do their creations justice. But Cheok notes that this is just a glimpse of what’s possible

MultiChoice Expands Digital Terrestrial Television Distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa on Intelsat 904

Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), the world’s leading provider of satellite services, today announced that African direct-to-home operator, MultiChoice, is leveraging Intelsat capacity to expand the reach of its digital terrestrial television (DTT) offering in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Under the agreement, MultiChoice, a pioneer in the Sub-Saharan African market, will expand its C-band capacity on Intelsat 904 at 60º East to distribute content to its terrestrial towers for DTT services. Intelsat 904 enables MultiChoice to further expand its DTT GOtv product offering to countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where it is already present, including Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Namibia and Malawi, and to target new countries.

ITU Conference sets agenda for future ICT development

The Dubai Action Plan, adopted today by the ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference, sets the agenda for telecommunication and information and communication technology development over the next four years.

Under the theme ‘Broadband for Sustainable Development’, the Conference focused on development priorities and agreed on the programmes, projects and initiatives to implement them. The theme underlines ITU’s commitment to leverage broadband as a catalyst to meet the goals of sustainable development.

Latest data from Ofcom on Uk Broadband speeds

Quote from Communications Minister Ed Vaziey relating to Ofcom’s report findings.

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey said: “Ofcom’s report confirms the remarkable transformation of UK Broadband currently underway. The UK has the best superfast coverage of all five leading European economies, and the news that average speeds continue to rise is tremendous news for homes and businesses alike. We are working hard to close the digital divide between urban and rural locations and are investing £790m to ensure that 95% of the UK will have access to superfast speeds by 2017.”

Samsung and Amazon Join Forces With Kindle

Samsung Electronics and Amazon today announced a partnership to launch Kindle for Samsung, a custom-built eBook service. The app will debut in April starting with the Galaxy S5 along with existing Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets that have Android 4.0 or above. As part of the service, Amazon and Samsung will launch Samsung Book Deals, available to everyone using Kindle for Samsung.

Clara’s Big Ride Unites Youth for a National Conversation on Mental Health

On her first stop in Canada’s territories for Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk, Clara Hughes will host a national youth conversation on mental health with a special live broadcast from Iqaluit’s Inuksuk High School to thousands of students across Canada.

Believing that youth can have a powerful impact in uniting Canadians around the issue of mental health, Bell, Cisco and Northwestel have teamed up to deliver the special webcast through Cisco® high-definition video collaboration technologies, Cisco TelePresence® and WebEx® Enabled TelePresence, and bandwidth provided by Northwestel.

Youth from across Canada will be invited to virtually join Clara and Grade 7-10 students on Friday, May 2, at Inuksuk High School for this groundbreaking event. Clara will share the story of her personal struggle with depression, give students a first-hand account of her Ride across Canada and discuss the ways we can all work to achieve a Canada free of the stigma that still surrounds mental illness. Students will also hear from Whit Fraser, president of the Arctic Child and Youth Foundation.

Ultra Electronics AEP today announced that it has signed a global agreement with Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a leading Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator. The agreement enables Thuraya to offer a complete end-to-end solution comprising the Communicate and Encrypt range of solutions geared towards end users in the government sector..

Cisco Ignites New Growth Opportunities for Cable Operators and Broadcasters at The Cable Show 2014

At The Cable Show 2014 in Los Angeles this week, Cisco is showcasing new innovations to its video technology portfolio that will ignite growth and drive new revenue opportunities for cable operators and broadcasters. Milestone announcements include comprehensive advancements to Cisco’s access architecture for cable operators and making Cisco’s service provider customer premise equipment (CPE) routing software available in open-source format. These innovations and more will be demonstrated in Hall H at Cisco booth #1323 in the Los Angeles Convention Center.
