Futurecom is an event focused on marketing and business that each year gathers together the leaders, the top management and decision makers of the Brazilian and South American Telecommunications. The event consists of an extensive seminar programme, with many distinguished international speakers, coupled with a business trade exhibition.

This year’s event took place in the city of Iguassu Falls, in the southwestern part of Brazil, at the end of October. Futurecom 2000, attracted more than 4,500 people, 114 exhibitors and 61 sponsors. The sponsoring companies and organisations included operating companies, suppliers, consulting companies, associations, publishing companies and the like. Futurecom was heavily attended by corporate customers as well. The heavily attended international seminars, 126 presentations and words discussion panels and three general keynote sessions included a great number of government figures as well as many key executives of important companies from Brazil and abroad. The Grand Opening Ceremony, with almost 2000 people inducing the presence of Brazil’s Minister of Communications, Pimenta da Veiga, the President of Anatel, Renato Navarro Guerreiro and the European Commission Ambassador, Mr. Rolf Timans and a great number of high-level figures from both government and private sectors. Among the featured speakers were the, Brazil’s Minister of Communications, The President of Anatel, leading government figures, the President of Bell Labs, Mr. Arun Netravali, the Presidents of companies (or their regional subsidiaries) such as AT&T, Motorola, Alcatel, Lucent, Brasil Telecom, GVT, Telefonica, Promon Siemens, TIM, Ericsson, CpqD, Bechtel, Xerox, Embratel, Algar, DoCoMo, Telesp, Americel, Cisco, GTE and Maxitel, among others. Futurecom had several goals. Internationally, Futurecom 2000, focused upon promoting the Brazilian telecommunications sector through its integration with such regional economic blocks as Mercosur, NAFTA and the European Community. On the regulatory front, the discussion at the seminars centred upon the outstanding regulatory questions and the relationship between Anatel, the Brazilian regulatory agency, and the telecommunications sector. Other seminar sessions were devoted to discussions and analysing the influence of the global information infrastructure upon Brazil’s development and integration in the ‘New Economy’. Conclusion The Futurecom show itself offered a good vision of the state-of-the-art products and services of the participating companies. The main appeal to the sector of the show itself, generally speaking, was its ability to foster personal business relationships.
