Advantech Wireless Announces Super Compact GaN based Amplifiers for Extended Troposcatter Networking Systems

Montreal,CANADA – March 1, 2016 –Advantech Wireless, a global leader in satellite broadband communications solutions, today announced the release of the second generation 500W, 4.4 – 5.0 GHz, GaN-based Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA).  This productwill extend wireless coverage to locations that were previously inaccessible, and accomplish this with reduced size, weight and power requirements.

The new Advantech Wireless Super Compact TT Series SapphireBluTM SSPAs/ SSPBs provide the highest power density in the industry and operate over the Low C-band TROPO frequency of 4.4 – 5.0 GHz. These new Solid State Power Amplifiers are designed to be used as direct replacement of older generation Klystrons or TWTs. Troposcatter (also known as tropospheric scatter) is a method of communicating with microwave signals reflecting from the atmosphere for robust communications links over very long distances.

“Tropospheric communication links are becoming a viable solution where there is now no satellite coverage or where satellite bandwidth cost is prohibitive,” said Advantech Wireless Vice President of Business Development Cristi Damian.  “These systems allow real time communication in these remote locations and are difficult to locate or jam.”

Specific applications for the new system include:

·         Extraction sites, such as oil or mining sites, which are often remote from existing networks, or where satellite bandwidth cost is prohibitive. These systems offer low operating cost not previously available.

·         Military operations for strategic communications links, often in places where there is little or no infrastructure, and there is need for mobile, secure, high bandwidth.  The lighter GaN amplifiers allows for design of a redundant system while remaining under the two-man lift limit.  This extends communications ranges with a jam-resistant and low operating cost solution.

Advantech Wireless’ Tropo line of GaN SSPAs continues to address this fast growing market with a unique highly efficient and powerful solution. These New SSPAs provide a 70% reduction in weight and size, and a 40% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous generations of tropo SSPAs. They are ideal for tactical mobile applications where size, weight and power efficiency are critical — a perfect match for the new generation of high data rate, long haul, cost efficient communication links using tropospheric scatter technologies. With extremely high linearity, these systems are redundant, with built-in L-band up converters and are very energy efficient.
