European Space Expo

Visitors to this week’s European Space Expo at Horse Guards Parade in London will experience first-hand the impact of satellite technology courtesy of Avanti Communications.

The European Space Expo is focusing on the benefits that space brings to everyday life. Visitors might be amazed to discover that the Expo’s complimentary wi-fi connection they are using to send email or surf the Internet is travelling 35,000km up to Avanti’s European satellite, HYLAS 1, and then down to its state-of-the-art communications facilities located at the iconic Goonhilly earth station.  So far on the first day, the service has clocked up over 500MB of data throughput at an average download speed of 10Mbps.

Christian Georgeson, Avanti’s Global Marketing Director said: “The European Space Expo is a fantastic roadshow which travels all over the continent demonstrating to people the enormous benefit space has on our everyday lives.

“It is now in London and we wanted to show people the impact satellite technology can have. Satellite broadband is hugely flexible and can bring affordable and fast data services to anywhere, no matter how remote.”

In August, Avanti launched its second satellite, HYLAS 2, which carries 24 active Ka-band user beams, 1 steerable beam and six gateway beams. It provides two-way communications services to facilitate high-speed delivery of data to end-user applications such as corporate networking, IP Trunking, cellular backhaul, broadband Internet access, business continuity services and video distribution.
