SK Telecom and NSN complete world’s first proof-of-concept of Liquid Applications over LTE

Operator uses NSN’s Liquid Applications to turn base station into local hub for service delivery

SK Telecom has finalized the lab-testing phase of Liquid Applications* over LTE, achieving a major milestone for enhancing the mobile broadband experience. The successful testing was conducted with three advanced services over LTE: location-based mobile advertising, augmented reality and premium application delivery.

SK Telecom and Nokia Solutions and Networks signed an agreement on February 27, 2013 during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013, to cooperate in the testing of Liquid Applications. The aim was to evaluate how effectively Liquid Applications would deliver a unique and personalized mobile broadband experience over LTE with applications, services and content located inside a mobile base station, in close proximity to the mobile subscriber.

After the installation of Liquid Applications into the SK Telecom laboratories at the end of June, testing was conducted during a three-month period, with a view to showing how Liquid Applications provided greater context for personalizing services and enabling the simple subscriber tariffs that SK Telecom offers for data-centric applications and services.

“We are pleased to be working closely with our longstanding partner NSN on this proof-of-concept project. With Liquid Applications, we expect to create an enriched Service Aware RAN environment that brings greater benefits to our customers through intelligent and personalized services,” said Choi Jin-sung, executive vice president and head of ICT R&D Center of SK Telecom.

“The successful testing of Liquid Applications with SK Telecom showed significant efficiency gains for service delivery. This demonstrates that our mobile edge computing capability can transform the delivery of mobile broadband content and enable an exciting responsive and customized experience for mobile subscribers,” said Dirk Lindemeier, head of Liquid Net at NSN. “We are looking forward to working with SK Telecom to deploy Liquid Applications into their commercial LTE network.”
