Eurosport Chooses New ViBE™ CP6000 Contribution Platform From Thomson Video Networks
RENNES, France — Sept. 7, 2012 — Thomson Video Networks today announced that Eurosport has chosen the new ViBE™ CP6000 for a contribution system the broadcaster is building during 2012. Located over five sites in France and the U.K., the new system will be shared between Eurosport and its owner, TF1 Group, which operates Europe’s largest private television channel. The system is based on 12 links transporting MPEG-4 HD 4:2:2 at 8 or 10 bits. The Eurosport network provides coverage of European and international sporting events to 59 European countries and 10 in Asia, in 20 different languages.
Thomson’s new ViBE CP6000 contribution platform suits Eurosport’s deployment needs perfectly. The platform’s multichannel capability, including a mix of encoders and decoders in a single chassis, offers significant system cost savings. The main site of the Eurosport system includes five encoders and three decoders. A standard solution would require an 8RU chassis with power consumption of 600W, while the CP6000 solution fits into a 2RU chassis, with a consumption of 300W. The CP6000 embeds the latest video encoding technology, allowing additional encoder or decoder channels to be added easily via software license upgrades.
“The CP6000 is a very good fit for our needs as we build this new system. Its modularity and the density it provides make it very attractive for our requirements,” said Pascal Crochemore, chief technical network manager, Eurosport. “Thomson Video Networks is a very responsive partner, and has been able to meet our requirements at short notice and with a high-quality solution.”
Developed as a multiformat system for broadcasters, video carriers, network operators, and telecoms, the ViBE CP6000 provides high-quality transport of live HD and SD content over IP or satellite contribution networks. Offering a far greater density than comparable products, the CP6000’s capacity of up to eight HD channels in a single chassis is a key advantage for live broadcasters, saving space and lowering energy consumption.
“This is a landmark first installation for the ViBE CP6000, which received its official launch at the 2012 NAB Show,” said Christophe Delahousse, president of Thomson Video Networks. “We are very pleased by the reaction to the product from a significant broadcaster like Eurosport, where premium video quality is paramount. It is a strong endorsement of the CP6000 concept and its benefits.”
Based on a standard, high-performance backplane throughput to address future applications, the ViBE CP6000 architecture is a future-proof contribution platform designed to optimize customer investment and minimize the cost of ownership. It is ready for 3Gbps SDI applications (1080p50/59.97), and its dual-channels-per-module architecture targets 3D applications. Hot-swappable modules allow for instant exchange without disturbing channels in use, a feature that is key to the system’s easy setup, expansion, and maintenance.
Thomson’s new ViBE CP6000 goes far beyond an encoder or a decoder — it is an innovative contribution platform designed to provide significant customer benefits.
