Thales hardware security modules provide on-demand digital certificates to government agencies on UK G-Cloud

London, UK – 11 June 2013 – Thales, leader in information systems and communications security, announces that its nShield hardware security modules (HSMs) are being used by Trustis, a leading provider of managed public key infrastructure (PKI) services and digital certificates, to provide strong authentication for mobile devices – quickly and on demand. The service can play a vital role in enabling an enterprise ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) strategy and for protecting government agencies using the UK government G-Cloud – a similar initiative to President Obama’s Cloud First in the US.

The Trustis Mobile Device Certificate Service (MDCS) provides on-demand digital certificates for public and private organizations that want to give their employees secure access to their networks via smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices, but lack the skill or resources to create a new PKI, or to upgrade an existing system to support the special certificates needed for mobile devices.

Trustis chose to build its MDCS solution with Thales nShield Connect hardware security modules (HSMs) to establish the high level of security assurance necessary for such a widely trusted service. The use of the nShield HSM not only allow Trustis to meet the exacting security standards of UK government classification, but also to achieve the reliability, scalability and high availability required of a cloud service for both public and private organisations.

Robert Hann, Business Development Director, Trustis says:
“High security cloud services are still relatively new to both government and enterprise and there can still be many security objections to deal with. Trustis specialises in on-demand services where high assurance, security and compliance is mandatory. Our accredited Mobile Device Certificate Service, available on the UK Government G-Cloud 2 is built around Thales nShield Connect HSMs, allowing government agencies to confidently roll out a few dozen smartphones or 100,000 iPads quickly and without a lengthy IT security project – without risk and crucially, at a reasonable cost. Having a partner like Thales that is a leader in its field and that can assist organizations to migrate to our cloud services is vital to our shared success”

Richard Moulds, vice president strategy, Thales e-Security says:
“Many organizations are looking to BYOD solutions to increase productivity by enabling employees to use their own tablets and smart phones to access secure information on corporate or government networks. By making strong authentication easy, cost-effective and quick to deploy, organisations can achieve all the gains in productivity and collaboration that mobile devices can offer while mitigating some of the biggest risks. Thales HSMs have long been used to strengthen the security and assurance levels provided by a PKI, a best practice that is widely recognized around the globe.”
