Paris, August 25, 2010 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU)today announced that Gabriel Charlet, a researcher from Bell Labs, the company’s research arm, has been recognized by the MIT Technology Review as one of the world’s top innovators under the age of 35 for his research in optical systems. Selected from more than 300 nominees by a panel of expert judges and the editorial staff of Technology Review, the TR35 is an elite group of accomplished young innovators who exemplify the spirit of innovation. Their work–spanning medicine, computing, communications, nanotechnology, and more–is changing our world.

Gabriel Charlet is recognized for his overall research on optical networking systems based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM),a technology that enables high speed data transmission and is at the core of the Internet and telecommunications networks around the world. Charlet’s particular area of focus is coherent detection and advanced modulation formats and it is in these domains that his pioneering work was conducted. The resulting innovations are present in the new generation of 40 and 100 Gigabit/s fiber systems that Alcatel-Lucent announced in May 2010.

“Each year, Technology Review selects 35 innovators under the age of 35 who we believe are transforming technology. Discovering these amazing young men and women is one of the highlights of the year for us,” said Jason Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of Technology Review. “We celebrate their success and look forward to their continued advancement of technology in their respective fields.”

Gabriel Charlet and the other TR35 winners for 2010 will be featured in the September/October issue of Technology Reviewand online at www.technologyreview.com/tr35/. In addition, the EmTech@MIT 2010 Conference, to be held September 21–23 at MIT, will honor the winners with a dedicated awards ceremony and in a series of “Meet the TR35” presentations.

“This award further recognizes Bell Labs excellence in research, particularly in the area of optics where we have pioneered many firsts throughout the years including in terabit transmission, coherent detection and advanced modulation formats. Young researchers such as Gabriel advance our innovation capabilities to new levels and domains,” said Gee Rittenhouse, vice president of research at Bell Labs.
