GLASGOW-BASED TESCO YPR CROWNED WINNERS OF SAMSUNG’S GALAXY 11 CUP FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

After beating 328 teams from 27 different UK companies, the victors will go head-to-head with countries across Europe in a European-wide Galaxy 11 Cup

London, UK – 29th May 2014 – Samsung Electronics UK today announced the winners of the Galaxy 11 Cup, the UK’s biggest free 5-a-side football tournament. After a total of 1,200 local matches hosted at Goals and Power League Football Centres across the UK, Tesco YPR from Glasgow beat West Coast Galaxy SV 3-2 in a tense final stand-off at Villa Park, Birmingham on 15th May. Launched exclusively for Samsung IT & Mobile channel partners, the tournament was designed to thank them by connecting them through one of their passion points – football.

Running from November 2013- May 2014, the tournament brought together 328 teams from 27 different companies across the UK to battle it out for the chance to play in the Grand Final. Each team to make the final stage was led by a celebrity football manager, including Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith, ex Charlton Athletic and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley and global football aficionado Peter Reid. Uniting some of the biggest names in the mobile industry, the tournament helped connect football lovers both on and off the pitch through a dedicated Galaxy Cup online hub which allowed participants to chart their team’s progress, manage fixtures and view results.

Following their triumph at Villa Park, the Tesco YPR team will now go head to head with other finalists from Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal in a European Galaxy 11 Cup. The final will take place at Benfica’s stadium in Portugal on 2nd June, where the teams will battle it out for the ultimate title.

Simon Stanford, Vice President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland, said: ‘’A huge well done to Tesco YPR and to all the teams who threw themselves into the tournament with such great enthusiasm. We’re delighted with the response to our Galaxy 11 Cup initiative and thrilled to have brought together so many of our valued channel partners. We’re very much looking forward to building on these partnerships through the European Galaxy Cup final.’’

The other teams to make the quarter final at Villa Park were BT Slingers, Kondor Salmon Queens, EE La Coruna, Phones4u Murder on Zidanes Floor FC, Phones4u Finance, CPW Red All Stars, along with Tesco YPR and West Coast Galaxy SV.
