GSA achieves 50,000 registered users milestone

September 11th, 2012: The GSA announces today that an important milestone has been reached for the organization, with more than 50,000 people now registered on its website www.gsacom.com

GSA,  the Global mobile Suppliers Association, was established by leading suppliers in 1998 to promote and show the opportunities enabled with mobile communications using GSM/GPRS technology and its evolution, which now embraces WCDMA-HSPA, LTE and LTE-Advanced (all are global 3GPP standards). Key audiences were identified including network operators, policy-makers, governments, regulatory authorities, as well as other influencers including analysts and media, and all stakeholders.

Most of the outputs from GSA result from its own primary research, leveraging on the membership with several global suppliers, and also its excellent relationships with network operators throughout the world. GSA has a strong brand amongst the telecoms industry with a global audience and following for its authoritative reports and information papers, and is a trusted source for facts, statistics and analysis.

User registrations are personal and password protected for downloading reports, papers, surveys, charts, etc., and for receiving update alerts and news. Registration enables GSA to better understand its audiences, topics of interest, determine trends, and helps to measure the effectiveness of targeting of specific groups. It also facilitates access management to specific resources e.g. for content reserved for members only, etc.

Ericsson is proud to be one of the founding members of the GSA, says Johan Wibergh, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Unit Networks at Ericsson. This registration record shows that the GSA has become a widely appreciated and trusted organization in the telecom industry. Through the years, the people of the GSA have done a great job in informing the industry about many important areas in telecom and contributed to the success of 3GPP technologies like EDGE, HSPA, LTE and HD voice.

GSA has been pivotal in helping the wider mobile industry recognise important issues and opportunities, said Andrew Gilbert, Executive Vice President, European Innovation Development, Qualcomm. This industry moves at an incredible pace and GSA has always provided timely and highly relevant information when needed. GSA whitepapers and statistics on HD voice and UMTS900 have been key documents that highlight some of the exciting opportunities for our customers.

Alan Hadden, President of the GSA since first elected in 1998, said GSA has continuously evolved to r eflect and promote the extraordinary technical capabilities made possible through 3GPP standardization. A key focus is support to network operators to assist development of their businesses, by organizing seminars, developing case studies, reports, white papers, strong messaging to the policy-makers, participating in joint campaigns, etc.

Christian Daigneault, CTO, CSL Limited (Hong Kong) said: CSL collaboration with GSA in particular on the LTE1800 and LTE2600 MHz front has certainly contributed to the fast development of the eco-system into these two bands, as we can see from the high numbers of networks and devices now in these bands. This is helping the industry in deploying 4G LTE networks globally at the fastest speed ever seen for a wireless technology to offer an improved broadband experience to the more demanding customers.

Pradeep de Almeida, Group Chief Technology Officer, Dialog Telekom (Sri Lanka) said: GSA is doing a wonderfu l job and its web site gsacom.com has become a one stop shop for any key information like operator roll-outs, device eco system, vendor information, etc. etc. for Mobile Broadband. If you want the latest information for any mobile broadband ecosystem just login to gsacom.com.

Neil Montefiore, CEO of StarHub (Singapore) said: I have been using the GSA online resources since 1998. With its up-to-date reports, facts, analysis and information on market developments and trends in the wireless industry, GSA delivers market intelligence that our key decision-makers use in planning our mobile network rollout and tracking the development of network technologies and future mobile devices. I congratulate GSA for its latest achievement.

Mike Wright, Executive Director,  Networks & Access Technologies, Telstra (Australia) said: Telstra has worked closely with the GSA for a number of years to obtain vital information on emerging technology trends and take up rates. We have also jointly worked to gain industry alignment for new opportunities such as the recent emergence of LTE1800. The information papers, LinkedIn site and GSA site allow operators from around the world to obtain timely information to assist in network and strategic planning decisions.

The number of registered users increased by 52% in the past 2 years with 10,000 net additions confirmed over the last year. Importantly, new registrations are coming not only from the traditional telecoms players (mobile and fixed) but also from new sectors such as aviation, automotive, broadcasting, emergency services, energy, health, media, the music industry, police forces, publishing, regional and national broadband programs, retail, travel industry, etc.. Many of them are closely studying how LTE technology can help their respective businesses as a single unifying global standard.

The Evolution to LTE, Status of the LTE Ecosystem, Status of the Global LTE TDD Market, Global HSPA+ Network Commitments and œMobile HD Voice: Global Update are amongst the most requested reports on the GSA website. The average monthly downloads for these and other documents combined are running at a third higher than a year ago. The GAMBoD tool is a major success, developed by GSA, a unique and popular innovation enabling users from network operators and GSA member companies to study the maturity and capabilities of the mobile broadband ecosystem as confirmed in GSA™s databases of HSP/HSPA+ and LTE user devices.
