GSA confirms North America closes 2013 with 101 million of global 200 million subs total, Europe growing share

March 10th, 2014: GSA – the Global mobile Suppliers Association, confirms that the number of LTE subscriptions reached 101 million in North America in Q4 2013 (i.e. by 31st December 2013), and represented 50.5% of the global total of 200.1 million.

The total for the Asia Pacific regio n reached 77.8 million, equivalent to 39% share of global LTE subscriptions.

Europe ended 2013 with almost 8.2% share of the global LTE subscriptions total, compared to 5.7% six months earlier.

The total number of subscriptions across all mobile communications technologies increased by 399 million net to reach 6.78 billion by end 2013, representing 6.25% annual growth. WCDMA-HSPA networks added the most subscriptions, gaining 279 million in 2013 to reach 1.47 billion. LTE was next highest, with 125 million subscriptions gained during the year. Over 40 million subscriptions for LTE were added in the final 3 months of the year.

Alan Hadden, President of GSA, said: LTE subscriptions percentage growth in 2013 was easily the highest for any mobile technology, achieving an 166% increase. This was over 7 times more than any other technology.

GSA confirmed in its latest Evolution to LTE report that 274 operators had commercially launched LTE servi ce in 101 countries, and forecast there would be over 350 LTE networks in service by end 2014.
