Huawei Defines ICT as the Driver for the Next Industrial Revolution in which Mobile Broadband Plays a Critical Role

[Barcelona, Spain, February 26, 2014] Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has highlighted the importance of strong mobile broadband as the underlying competency to realize the next industrial revolution. Mr. Ken Hu, Rotating CEO and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Huawei, said in his keynote speech at the Broader Way Forum, held on the sidelines of Mobile World Congress, “I believe the next big thing is a new industrial revolution, a revolution driven by ICT.”

“ICT continues to drive the deep convergence of the digital and physical worlds. It is no longer just a tool to improve efficiency, but an enabler and a catalyst for the transformation of all industries.” Mr. Hu added, “The traditional sectors such as education, transportation, and banking will be given new life, as the utilization of the Internet and ICT have become fundamental to the business mindset, requiring us to put customers at the center of all business elements, and focus on customer experience in a way we never did before.”

However, Mr. Hu also listed end-to-end network costs as one of the challenges and called for the industry to address this challenge by improving spectrum allocation and utilization, encouraging infrastructure sharing and continuous innovation in network hardware and software.

During a panel discussion focused on spectrum policies, Mr. Hu reinforced this view by saying: “We would like to see regulators further improve spectrum utilization through better standardization processes that further reduce the cost of spectrum to carriers.”

During the infrastructure sharing and industry collaboration panel, Mr. Paul Scanlan, President of Business and Network Consulting at Huawei, said: “New mobile technologies are profoundly changing the way we live and work. ICT has been widely cited as a tool for economic development, and as such, government and business leaders are looking at ways to incorporate ICT as a core skill, as well as a cost-saving and revenue-generation tool. Governments must also embrace ICT as an enabler and a catalyst for the transformation of industries”.

More than 180 government officials, regulators and industry experts convened at the Broader Way Forum, themed “Enabling the Next Industry Revolution”, to discuss how to promote a more collaborative, cross-industry broadband ecosystem.
