Huawei’s Next-Generation Firewall Solutions Receive Common Criteria EAL4+ Certification

Beijing, China, Jan. 25, 2016 – Huawei today announced that its Unified Security Gateway (USG) and Eudemon series next-generation firewall solutions have been awarded Common Criteria (CC) certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL4+). It demonstrates the security and reliability of Huawei’s next-generation firewall products.

The evaluation was conducted by Epoche and Espri, an independent European security evaluation organization, which provides security evaluation and testing services to industry-leading international companies. EAL4+ is the highest assurance level that is recognized globally for network products.

CC is a set of security product evaluation specifications used internationally for IT security products. The Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) is the grade assigned to an IT product or system after completing a CC security evaluation. For many governments and organizations, CC serves an important basis for selecting security products. As the highest assurance level for network products, EAL4+ has a more rigorous evaluation procedure, which includes a product code review.

The USG and Eudemon next-generation firewall series are the flagship products of Huawei in the network security domain. With comprehensive security functions, easy-to-use management, refined control, and QoS improvement capabilities, the USG and Eudemon series provide comprehensive, efficient, and unified security protection for enterprises, organizations, and carriers of all sizes.

“The evaluation of the USG and Eudemon Firewall Series has been conducted at EAL4+ assurance levels, which constitute an exceptional commitment from Huawei to product security, well beyond today’s common and minimal approach taken by other vendors. This implies that customers can rest assured that the evaluated security functionality has been scrutinized at source code, providing the necessary robustness level and transparency required when using these firewalls to protect their privacy.” said Miguel Bañón, General Manager of Epoche and Espri.

“Achieving CC EAL4+ certification means our firewall products have been rigorously tested and evaluated to the highest standards. This certification provides governments and enterprises with further assurance of the security, reliability and integrity of Huawei’s firewall products. We have been investing in the security field for over 10 years and will continue to provide world-class security solutions to help customers address the fast-changing threat landscape,” said Liu Lizhu, Vice President, Switch & Enterprise Communications Product Line, Huawei.

In addition to the CC EAL4+ certification for the firewall solutions, Huawei has also obtained 19 CC certifications for various products, including security devices, switches, routers, and wireless devices, with evaluation assurance level ranging from EAL3+ to EAL4+.

About Common Criteria (CC) Certification

Common Criteria (CC) is an international set of guidelines and specifications developed for evaluating information security products, specifically to ensure they meet specific security standards for government and enterprise deployments. The Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) defines how thoroughly the product is tested.  Evaluation Assurance Levels are scaled from 1-7, with one being the lowest-level evaluation and seven being the highest-level of evaluation. A higher-level evaluation means the product went through more tests, than that with a lower-level of evaluation.

The goal of CC certification is to assure customers that the products they are selecting have been evaluated and verified by a vendor-neutral third party to enhance their confidence in IT product security; increase the security level of IT products and systems overall; and avoid duplicate evaluations.

Currently, CC certification is mutually recognized by 25 countries in different regions, including America, Asia, and Europe. Many world-renowned IT and ICT enterprises have invested heavily in CC certification. As of December 2015, a total of 646 vendors have been participating in CC certification with 3530 products being awarded CC certifications.
