IBC Launch of Appear TV SIM Descrambler Slashes Operator Costs for Re-Distribution of TV Channels

Oslo, Norway, September 11th, 2014Appear TV, a leading global provider of next-generation video processing platforms for broadcast and IP television, today announced that it is to launch and demonstrate a SIM Descrambler module at IBC2014 (stand 1.C61), which is aimed at operators descrambling a high number of channels, including the re-distribution of TV multiplexes via networks where piracy is a growing issue yet assets are often un-encrypted during distribution.

This module descrambles AES/DVB encrypted services using multiple SIM cards instead of traditional CAM based smart cards, enabling Appear TV to provide industry-leading density for this application. High density is important as content owners increasingly require content to be scrambled over the entire distribution chain, which in turn leads to many operators scrambling centrally and then having the requirement to deploy descrambling and re-scrambling at multiple points throughout the distribution network.

In such a scenario a single SIM descrambler module can hold 16 SIM cards, replacing 16 CAMs. With each SIM typically descrambling 10 services, this means that each module can descramble around 160 channels when using the SIM format. The deployment of the Appear TV SIM Descrambler reduces the physical footprint of descrambling by 75%, provides significant CAPEX savings, reduces electricity usage and increases reliability through reduced points of failure.

“A major reason for our continued success is that we listen to our customers and have the flexibility and engineering resources to act on customer requirements and specific issues,” said Carl Walter Holst, CEO of Appear TV.

“The Appear TV SIM Descrambler was the direct result of listening to customers and technology partners in the industry and meeting their requirements. We proved the concept and have integrated the solution with Conax and will broaden the scope of CAS partners using the SIM format as more content owner operators seek high density low impact flexible descrambling solutions throughout the network,” concluded Holst.
