Improved capacity and network quality for mobile services in Vietnam

  • Nokia Siemens Networks expands, upgrades VMS MobiFone packet core network
  • Also modernizes MobiFone GSM/3G radio network in southern and central Vietnam

VMS MobiFone, Vietnam’s leading telecoms operator, now benefits from a 50% increase in capacity in its packet core network thanks to Nokia Siemens Networks. In addition, under a separate contract, Nokia Siemens Networks modernized MobiFone’s GSM and 3G radio network in southern and central Vietnam. MobiFone is now better placed to handle the data surge on its networks due to growing numbers of people wanting to use its superior mobile broadband services. Both the upgraded packet core and radio networks are already in commercial use.

“We needed a reliable and flexible network that is able to accommodate the data traffic demands of today and tomorrow. In addition, we wanted to modernize our radio network to improve traffic capacity for our existing GSM network and enhance service experience for our GSM and 3G subscribers,” said Nguyen Dang Nguyen, deputy general director at MobiFone. “Nokia Siemens Networks has helped us realize these twin goals. The high capacity core network will help us serve more subscribers, while the modernized radio network will enable us to offer high-speed data services to our growing number of smartphone subscribers.”

“Rapid adoption of smartphones is driving a mobile internet boom in the Vietnam market, also characterized by growing competition amongst telecom operators. As MobiFone’s long standing partner and its sole packet core vendor, we were familiar with the operator’s core and radio network upgrade requirements and understood their expectations completely,” added Tanat Techatanabaht, country director at Nokia Siemens Networks Vietnam. “These upgrade projects will help MobiFone gain an even stronger foothold in the market, and generate new revenue streams by offering value-added services.”

Nokia Siemens Networks upgraded MobiFone’s packet core network with its power-efficient Flexi Intelligent Service Node (Flexi ISN) to enable simplified data management and charging functionality. The company optimized MobiFone’s IP backbone to increase reliability and scalability. In addition, the contract includes the ATCA-based* Flexi Network Gateway (Flexi NG), part of the Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Core architecture. It provides high throughput and signaling capacity to support increasing mobile broadband traffic volumes.

Nokia Siemens Networks also deployed its Serve atOnce Traffica, part of its Customer Experience Management offering. It allows the operator to monitor the service quality, service use as well as the network-wide traffic in real-time across various technologies and systems from different vendors. The contract also includes the company’s One-NDS subscriber data management system. One- NDS provides MobiFone a unified view of its subscriber data, helping it speed up the launch of new, targeted services. In addition, the company provided NetAct, a single, unified management system capable of managing all relevant network elements, and also a single point of network authentication and policy management across all types of networks.

Under a separate contract, Nokia Siemens Networks upgraded MobiFone’s GSM/3G network with its Single RAN platform, built around its compact, energy efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station. The company also provided its optical transport platforms, hiT 7035 and hiT 7065, which offer a full range of connectivity options to meet traffic growth demands, while safeguarding existing investments. Nokia Siemens Networks upgraded its NetAct network management system to enable a consolidated and effective monitoring, management and optimization of MobiFone’s GSM/3G network.

Under both the contracts, Nokia Siemens Networks provided services that include network design, installation, commissioning and implementation besides end-to-end project management for rapid rollout of the network. The company also provided training under care services.
