New TIA Standard Lays Foundation for Future of M2M and the Internet of Things
TIA’s TR-50.1 Smart Device Communications, Requirements and Architecture Engineering Subcommittee recently released its Smart Device Communications Reference Architecture standard addressing machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies and markets.
The landmark standard, TIA-4940 Smart Device Communications Reference Architecture, addresses common requirements and interoperability of essential intelligent/smart devices across industries.
The specification will work across both wired and wireless transport layers and take advantage of IP-enabled applications covering different types of vertical markets. The standard will help enable M2M communications such as:
· Smart metering for utility networks
· Remote healthcare monitoring for patient services
· Traffic monitoring for intelligent transport systems (ITS)
· Building automation including green, sustainable and carbon-reduction
“We are very pleased that the committee developed this M2M Standard quickly with effective collaboration with other international Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) throughout the process,” said Cheryl Blum, TIA Vice-President for Technology and Standards.
The standard takes into account: security (e.g., data content, authentication, signaling); end-to-end performance and scalability of equipment and networks; and device management (including discovery and identity).
The subcomittee’s parent committee, TR-50 Smart Device Communications Engineering Committee, has also created a Security Ad-Hoc Group to analyze the threats that may be posed by M2M services and to assess how they can be mitigated effectively. The group is being chaired by Mr. Chuck Bokath of the Georgia Tech Research Institute, which is working on M2M network and device security.
TIA also hosts the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) M2M Standardization Task Force (MSTF), chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Smith, TR-50 Chair and CTO of Numerex, Corp. At the GSC-16 meeting held recently in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, the MSTF provided an extensive map of M2M activities in organizations and forums around the world.

Cloud Computing Standards Task Group
With the focus in 2011 on cloud computing standards, TIA recently created a new task group to address the issue. TR-42.1.1 Data Fabrics Task Group, chaired by Jonathan Jew, plans to explore fabric networking layouts for data centers, which are primarily used for large-scale distributed computing clusters (e.g., cloud computing). The group plans to study the efficacy of fabrics and potentially incorporate their findings as an addendum to a revised version of the TIA-942 data center infrastructure standard, which will be published in the first quarter of 2012. TIA Joins Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP)
TIA recently joined the board of directors for STEP, a technology certification and rating system managed by the STEP Foundation, a non-profit organization comprising technology trade association representatives, their members, and supporters. STEP joins a list of sustainable rating systems like U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED® ) Rating System and other green building ratings systems and sustainable codes and standards from organizations such as the International Code Council (ICC), Green Globes, ASHRAE and others. However, STEP specifically addresses the approach to the sustainable planning, design, integration and operation of low-voltage building and communication technologies.

P25 Land Mobile Radio Public Safety Standards – Phase I and Phase II Full Sets Available
The full TIA-102 series of standards used by APCO Project 25 (P25) for public safety technology, developed by TIA’s TR-8 Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards Engineering Committee, are now available for purchase. The P25 suite of standards addresses digital Land Mobile Radio (LMR) services for local, state and national (federal) public safety organizations and agencies. P25 is applicable to LMR equipment authorized or licensed, in the United States, under National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) or Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations.
These standards documents add a Phase 2 TDMA trunked voice service to the Phase 1 FDMA Trunked voice and packet data services available today. This operation enables organizations to double their voice capacity from Phase 1 FDMA and allows both operators and equipment manufacturers to meet FCC 6.25 kHz requirements.

TIA Participated Extensively in GSC-16 Annual Meeting
TIA’s recently submitted numerous contributions to the 16th annual meeting of the Global Standardization Collaboration (GSC-16) held Oct. 31 – Nov. 3, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The annual event, hosted in 2011 by ICT Standards Advisory Council of Canada (ISACC), provided a venue for senior world leaders from participating standards organizations and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to freely exchange information on the progress of standards development in different regions and to collaborate in planning future standards development to gain synergy and reduce duplication.
TIA, with the help of its many member companies, submitted over 25 contributions addressing many high interest subjects including: the M2M (Machine-to-Machine) Initiative, Emergency Communications, Smart Grid, Security and Lawful Intercept, Cloud Services, IMT Standardization, Cybersecurity, Information Communications Technologies (ICT) and the Environment, Intelligent Traffic Systems, Reconfigurable Radio Systems, and Broadband Wireless Access.
TIA, as the host of the GSC M2M Standardization Task Force (MSTF), provided an extensive map of M2M activities in organizations and forums around the world. The MSTF was approved to go forward until GSC-17, to be held in May 2013, hosted by TTA in Korea.
TIA was also very proud to lead the discussion and deliver a submission on ICT Accessibility, matching the GSC-16 theme, “ICT Accessibility for All.” Download GSC-16 Communique: “ICT Accessibility for All” (PDF 34 KB).
GSC-16 also established an Emergency Communications Task Force, with which TIA, having a long history in Public Safety and Emergency Communications, plans to actively participate.
