Taiwan’s largest satellite service operator chooses for latest encryption technology with extreme renewability

Beijing – December 16 2010: Irdeto, a global software security and media technology company, today announced that Teleport Access Services, the leading provider of fixed satellite services in Taiwan, has signed an agreement with Irdeto to upgrade its conditional access system to provide increased protection to its Direct To Operator service.

Teleport Access Services (TAS) is the largest satellite-based communication service operator in Taiwan, with a total of 115 channels currently being uplinked to 4 different satellites. TAS partners with local and regional TV broadcasters including GALA Television Corporation Taiwan, Sky Perfect JSAT Japan, STAR Group Hong Kong to offer reliable, high-performance cable feeds to Taiwanese cable TV households.

Yu-Chun Kuo, President of TAS, said, “In recent year there is a rapidly growing piracy problem in Taiwan’s broadcasting industry. Like all direct-broadcast satellite operators, TAS needs an effective way to prevent content piracy. Our primary objective is to avoid customer and revenue loss from piracy. Irdeto’s Conditional Access Solution (CAS) is helping us achieve that goal.”

Irdeto CAS 3 provides renewable security by updating smart cards or software-based clients over the air via Irdeto’s FlexiFlash technology. A built-in mechanism enables operators to quickly respond to piracy, allowing for major security and functionality changes to the smart card software without the operational costs usually associated with a physical smart card swap, thus speeding the deployment time of piracy counter measures or new services.

Bengt Jonsson, Irdeto’s vice president of sales, Asia, said, “After an intense evaluation of the CAS solutions on the market, TAS made the decision to partner with Irdeto because our proven technology can maximize their return on investment by extending the existing smart card life as long as possible, and renew security clients without disrupting subscribers’ viewing experience.”

Asia is the world’s largest pay TV region, with a penetration rate of 50% and a total of 363 million households subscribing to pay TV services. In Taiwan, inexpensive subscription rates have made the island the most successful pay TV market in Asia; with 78 percent of TV households (5.93 million homes) subscribing to pay TV. Growth is expected to continue in the region as operators increase service availability while lowering service costs to increase affordability. Anti-piracy measures and fighting illegal services, particularly online, will be a key focus in the region as pay TV services become increasingly ubiquitous.
