Ireland’s eircom Group Deploys Aptilo’s Mobile Data Offloading Solution

STOCKHOLM – March 6, 2012 – Aptilo Networks, the leading provider of mobile data offloading solutions, today announced that Ireland’s eircom Group, the largest telecommunications operator in Ireland, has bundled Wi-Fi services with all of their data plans using the Aptilo solutions for carrier-class Wi-Fi service management and mobile data offloading.

Being a pioneer among operators with its first Wi-Fi network deployed in 2002 – using the Aptilo service management solution – eircom broadband, eMobile and Meteor customers are now leveraging the network as an important customer acquisition and retention tool by providing seamless, secure offload of data from their 3G networks to Wi-Fi.  For eircom broadband, eMobile and Meteor customers, the Aptilo mobile data offload solution means faster data speeds and exceptional ease-of-use.

For customers using laptop computers, Aptilo’s offload solution works hand-in-hand with the EasyConnect software client from Birdstep Technology which silently obtains login credentials from the Aptilo Credential Server via SMS.  This enables an automated login process to the Wi-Fi network. The EasyConnect software is pre-installed on all eircom, eMobile and Meteor 3G USB modems.

For other devices like smartphones, users are provisioned with login credentials via a manual SMS exchange with the Aptilo Credential Server.

The login page to the Wi-Fi service has a special version adapted specifically for Apple iPhones and iPads, which captures user credentials at first login.  Aptilo’s platform then configures the iPhone/iPad so that future logins will be automatic.

“From being just one of the many services that we provide, our Wi-Fi offering has rapidly become a strategic tool for optimising the use of our network assets.  The ability to offer customers a first-class user experience gives us a competitive edge,” said John Bermingham, Senior Product Manager – Data Products, eircom Group. “The key to a successful mobile data offloading strategy is making that move from the 3G network to the Wi-Fi network truly invisible to the user.  We are already exploring more options in Aptilo’s innovative mobile data offloading solution to make this move seamless for all our customers.”

Aptilo’s service management system enables carrier-class, secure and manageable Wi-Fi services.  For eircom Group, Aptilo’s system also delivers service provisioning and simplified account creation.  It also offers eircom-meteor customers the convenience of account management through a consumer-facing WEB portal.

Users who are not eircom broadband, eMobile or Meteor customers can sign up for 10 minutes of free Wi-Fi access per day and then top-up for the rest of the day for 1 EUR via credit card or SMS payment.

“The mobile data offloading market is growing exponentially and is a perfect fit for our offerings. Very few of Aptilo’s competitors can provide a holistic approach that includes carrier-class Wi-Fi service management, a multitude of authentication methods for Wi-Fi usage including SIM authentication and tight integration with the mobile core and OSS/BSS for policy and charging,” said Torbjörn Wård, CEO, Aptilo Networks.
