Latin American Telecommunications Congress 2017,

20-23 June, Cartagena, Colombia

The fifth CLT was be held from 20 to 23 June in Cartagena, organised by ITU, CAF, GSMA, ASIET and CRC. The most important telecommunications event in Latin America brought together the region’s leading executives, ministers and academics in the digital ecosystem.

Intelsat 35e Preparing for Take-Off

Intelsat, operator of the world’s first Globalized Network and leader in integrated satellite communications is preparing for the launch of Intelsat 35e, the fourth in their next-generation of high throughput satellites. The high performance satellite will be launched by SpaceX on the Falcon 9 launch vehicle on July 2, 2017 at 7:36 pm EDT in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Manufactured by Boeing and equipped with an advanced digital payload, Intelsat 35e will deliver high performance services in C- and Ku-band for wireless infrastructure, mobility, broadband, government and media customers in the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Intelsat 35e will be placed into service at 325.5° East where it replaces Intelsat 903, which will be redeployed to another Intelsat orbital location by year-end.

Nokia To Supply Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group With Advanced Wireless Networking Technology For Smart City Services

Nokia is to supply a LTE network in the 700 megahertz spectrum band to the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group, a diversified broadcasting, media, manufacturing and real estate company. The deployment will transform Shanghai’s fast-growing former industrial district of Hongkou through a range of new smart city services, for which Nokia will supply advanced wireless communications based on FDD-LTE technology for smart city and public safety applications. Nokia Shanghai Bell, Nokia’s JV company in China will provide the deployment and services.

New Cloud Platform Simplifies Telco Deployments of Secure Edge Computing Applications

Telecom service providers worldwide are increasingly viewing applications hosted at the network edge as compelling business opportunities. While revenues from traditional broadband and voice services are essentially flat, edge applications present opportunities to sell new kinds of services to new kinds of customers. This provides the potential for increased market penetration as well as improved Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for those service providers who can be early to market with attractive offerings.

Disruptive Big Data Company Quantexa Furthers Global

Quantexa, the disruptive big data and analytics company backed by HSBC and Albion Ventures, has furthered its international expansion by opening a new office in Sydney, Australia. This builds upon their accelerated growth this year, which has seen the opening of their Brussels office in April and the doubling in size of their Global Headquarters in London.

Following on from their $3.3m fund raising earlier this year, Quantexa’s expansion reflects a growing customer base outside the UK. The Sydney office will put the company in closer proximity to its clients in APAC and forms part of its aggressive international growth plans. Quantexa can already boast an impressive client list that includes some of the world’s largest financial institutions, many of which have extensive presence in APAC.

World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2017

A significant stride forward was achieved last week by the information and communication technology (ICT) for development community at the World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2017 (WSIS Forum 2017), attended by more than 2,000 stakeholders from 163 countries. Participants came together to share experiences, knowledge and perspectives; and to announce new tools and initiatives to use ICTs to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in such critical areas as ICT-centric innovation, accessibility, gender equality, youth empowerment, e-health and cyber security among many others.

WSIS Forum 2017 was held 12-16 June in Geneva, and included the participation of more than 85 high-level government and civil society representatives, as well as 500 remote interventions and thousands following the webcast. The forum was chaired by Mr Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Minister of Youth and ICT, Government of Rwanda, and co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNCTAD and UNDP, in close collaboration with all UN agencies.

NetComm Wireless and Telefónica announce global IoT supply agreement

NetComm Wireless Limited (ASX: NTC) and Telefónica today announced the signing of an IoT Device Supply Agreement.The agreement further strengthens NetComm Wireless’ presence in the US and Europe; and offers new 3G/4G M2M/IoT capabilities for smart city, mobility, retail and energy applications across multiple geographies as Telefónica extends its IoT reach to over 2,500 enterprises worldwide.

CPC Issues a New Recommendation on Submarine Cable Operations and Deep Seabed Mining

he International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC) has issued its much-awaited Recommendation No. 17 titled: Submarine Cable Operations in Deep Seabed Mining Concessions Designated by the International Seabed Authority.

The laying of submarine cables and deep sea mining are both legitimate uses of the seabed, as governed by international law. To allow these two activities to operate in harmony, the ICPC provides best industry practice to facilitate a good working relationship between cable owners, mining contractors and other seabed users.

oneM2M’s Interop 4 sees IoT standardisation gain momentum

IoT interoperability and standardisation has advanced significantly in Taiwan after oneM2M, the global standards initiative for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and the Internet of Things (IoT), held its fourth interoperability testing event in Taipei.

Interop 4 gave organisations implementing oneM2M standards the opportunity to check end-to-end functionality via oneM2M interfaces and validate interoperability, with a total of 13 companies taking part. A conference held the day before the event featured presentations from leading companies and members of oneM2M’s leadership team to promote oneM2M to Taiwanese businesses in the IoT sector.

ZTE introduces carrier-grade DevOps for 5G network slicing

ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced that Dr Zhang Senlin, Chief Architect of CTO Team at ZTE, delivered a speech at 5G World 2017, London. Dr Zhang Senlin’s speech was entitled “Network Slicing, a way to optimise the network” and described ZTE’s 5G-oriented network slicing technology. This technology is based on cloud native micro-service architecture from the core network and the DevOps platform, enabling operators to easily and quickly invoke network resources to meet diversified vertical industry needs in the 5G era.

Panasonic hybrid scanners promise faster, more efficient workflow

Panasonic has announced the launch of the KV-SL30 series of hybrid scanners that promise to deliver greater scanning efficiency and lower cost of ownership for users.

Aimed at organisations such as hotels, healthcare providers and travel companies, the two A4 scanners (KV-SL3066 and KV-SL3056) feature a flatbed which is integrated with an automatic document feeder, meaning they can handle damaged documents, booklets, passports, ID cards, envelopes and mixed-size documents easily.

Panasonic has worked to improve the scanning time of the flatbed, reducing it by half compared to the previous model. The KV-SL3066 scans at 65ppm/130ipm and the KV-SL3056 scans at 45ppm/90ipm, making them the fastest of all Panasonic models in the same class.

Toshiba Launches a Power Management IC for Car Audio Solution

Düsseldorf, Germany, 08 June, 2017 Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) today announced the launch of a new system regulator IC that is designed to handle the increasing sophistication of car audio systems. The TCB010FNG is a fully-featured solution, incorporating the required power supply and all essential detection functions.

 Zyxel launches premium LTE indoor gateway at 5G World

At this year’s 5G World in London, Zyxel will launch its new LTE indoor gateway LTE5366 – a powerful wireless router that matches Wi-Fi performance with fast LTE speeds.

Combining LTE category 6 compliance with the latest MU-MIMO 802.11ac technology, the LTE5366 boosts indoor connectivity by delivering download speeds of up to 300Mbps and data rates twice that of category 4. With built-in wave 2 802.11ac wireless, the gateway provides much higher speeds and better coverage to match the LTE experience – ideal for venues that have intensive concurrent users.

TCB010FNG incorporates a multi-rail microcontroller power supply that retains power during minor interruptions in the battery supply. The device also includes multiple variable power supplies for flexibility, as well as a fixed power supply.
