KEYMILE adds Power-over-Ethernet functionality to UMUX

Hanover, Germany, September 19, 2008 – With its new SWITE module, KEYMILE is now offering an Ethernet switch card that adds Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) functions to the UMUX platform. UMUX is a multiservice access system for public and private communication networks. KEYMILE, a leading manufacturer and vendor of next-generation access systems, has expanded the existing Ethernet functionality of the UMUX system with its SWITE card. The new module lets Ethernet connections be realized in locations without local power, making it suitable for deploying terminal devices such as video cameras, IP telephones, access control systems, wireless access nodes and wireless local networks in remote locations. These are typical applications for the operators of railways, public transport systems, highways, airports, waterways and public utilities, as well as oil and gas pipelines. Eliminating the costs of providing electrical power in remote locations is one of the great advantages of PoE: laying of dedicated power cables is not required, allowing Ethernet devices to be installed in inaccessible locations or areas in which cables would otherwise be unwelcome. In addition to providing power without additional infrastructure, PoE installations act as a central backup system to protect against power failures. The backup of the telecommunications equipment simultaneously acts as a backup power supply. The SWITE card also provides the UMUX next-generation multiservice access system with an independent switch with advanced L2 functionality such as traffic prioritization, VLAN tagging, VLAN tag stacking, STP/RSTP and TLS. The UMUX can thus provide switched Ethernet services without the need for an external switch. The SWITE card meshes with other UMUX modules for a comprehensive solution for switched Ethernet services and their transport over Ethernet or SDH networks. SWITE supports Power-over-Ethernet (PoE, 12.95W) and Power-over-Ethernet Plus (29.5W). The UMUX and its wide range of services is centrally managed via UCST/UNEM. By using a single element manager, operators can cut costs further while speeding up the provision process.
