KEYMILE expands Ethernet functionality on MileGate for mission critical data transmission in dedicated networks

Hanover, August 11, 2011 KEYMILE introduces its newest Ethernet cards developed for mission critical applications for the MileGate platform. In addition to their robust design, the cards give network operators maximum flexibility in providing highly reliable Ethernet services. These new Ethernet cards have high port densities offered in optical or electrical interfaces. Furthermore, they are prepared to support features such as synchronous Ethernet and advanced switching capabilities.

KEYMILE, a leading supplier of cutting-edge technology for communications solutions in access and transmission systems, is launching new cards for its multi-service access platform MileGate. With these cards KEYMILE meets the increasing demand for highly available Ethernet services in the dedicated networks of railways, utilities etc. The cards have been designed to meet strict conformance and performance requirements for these applications.

KEYMILE only utilises high-quality components, so that modules can be used in a wide range of environmental conditions to ensure continuous operation in temperatures between -25°C to +60°C. Therefore, KEYMILE’s system is most suitable for any outdoor installations with harsh ambient conditions.

Dedicated networks in particular require robust equipment because these are often installed in areas with poor access, such as tunnels or in remote electrical distribution stations, making exchanging the components time consuming and expensive. With this in mind, KEYMILE designs its products to achieve excellent MTBF rates.

Operators of public communications networks also benefit from such extreme reliability, especially for their business subscribers such as banks, industrial facilities, corporate networks, shopping malls etc. These subscribers rely on high quality telecommunication services to meet their critical applications.

The first card provides 12 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces with the support of various optical and/or electrical SFP (Small Form-Factor Plugable) modules.

As a result, operators do not have to fit the transmission modules with SFP lasers until they have the relevant customers or applications. This reduces initial CAPEX investment to a pay-as-you-grow model. The second card has 24 electrical Ethernet ports (10/100/1000 Mbps) with standard RJ-45 connectors.

Both cards are designed for synchronous Ethernet and therefore ideal for applications that require very high clock accuracy, such as wireless backhaul. Their advanced switching function ensures fastest activation of redundant paths in case of network failure. Both these functions will be available with a simple software upgrade. With these new cards, MileGate acts as a modular Ethernet switch with powerful switching capacity.

The cards have access to the 1 or 10 Gigabit-Ethernet dual-star backplane allowing each port to perform with higher throughput demand in either business subscriber or mission-critical Ethernet applications. The cards can be used for a variety of services including LAN coupling, GSM-R, WiFi backhaul, local loudspeaker systems, or telephony or video transmission (CCTV). A wide range of security functions ensures safe transmission of highly sensible data. Due to the high port density, up to 240 ports per MileGate subrack can be provided.

Another new MileGate card supports 8 ports with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE+) so that network operators can now offer not just the data connection, but also the power supply for terminal equipment at the same time.

Within the MileGate platform all Ethernet cards can be combined with TDM cards, therefore giving customers the biggest possible flexibility as regards transmission and services technology (Ethernet and TDM, copper and optical fibre). Apart from advanced technology, the cards also entail even more benefits for the network operators. A wide range of services can be delivered with one single MileGate subrack. The cards are managed with one standard, user-friendly management system. The MileGate cards are also compatible with SNMP, so that they can be monitored in heterogeneous environments with a third party’s existing management solution.
