Companies explore benefits of new business models between service providers and third party developers and content providers

Paris, November 3, 2010— KPN, a leading European service provider, and Alcatel-Lucent have jointly announced they have co-developed and demonstrated how to expose features on KPN’s fixed network to maximize value to subscribers. It is evidence that both companies share an Application Enablement vision, which combines the trusted capabilities of service providers with the speed and innovation of the Web to enable a new generation of services that provides both consumers and business users with richer experiences.

Focusing on how to improve network control and policy management, KPN and Alcatel-Lucent have explored how to securely expose network APIs (application programming interfaces) to third party developers to enable a new generation of differentiated commercial content services. The developed capabilities include:
How to improve quality of experience for consumers of premium content over their broadband connections
The potential of offering broadband consumers the ability to set preferences for usage of their connections. For example: prioritizing content from their favorite websites, blocking point-to-point traffic and giving priority to a particular computer or video stream to prevent other computers using the same connection from degrading bandwidth performance
Ways to un-tap the bandwidth reserved for IPTV to allow boost delivery of other premium content services as well

“Our work with Alcatel-Lucent has helped KPN realize the full potential of exposing network assets to third party developers and content providers,” said Damir Hajdarovic, Strategy Director at KPN. “We can truly unlock the network value by implementing these features in our network. The project has resulted in the formation of an Application Enablement function within our company to further develop strategies for opening up network capabilities and implementing commercial initiatives in this area.”

“We have worked with KPN to find an elegant way to merge its network capabilities with the inventiveness of a vast ecosystem of developers to maximize the value KPN can bring to its subscribers,” said Kenneth Frank, president of Alcatel-Lucent Solutions. “KPN’s holistic and pragmatic approach to Application Enablement will secure the company’s proposition in the Web 2.0 value chain and beyond.”
