Amsterdam, September 12, 2014TeamCast, the world renowned leader in digital modulation technologies for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), Wireless Transmission and Satellite Applications, is proud to announce that TDF has chosen a DVB-T2 transmitter from Plisch using a TeamCast modulator for its 4K pilot transmission over Paris.

The French broadcasting operator TDF started an experimental transmission of UHDTV services from its transmission centre located at the Eiffel Tower, at the end of May 2014. With an expected duration of several months, this experiment aims to evaluate and demonstrate the immersive quality of the so-called 4K format (4 times more pixels than conventional HD) in a real terrestrial transmission environment. TDF has chosen to bring together HEVC encoding and DVB-T2 transmission for this experiment, as an illustration of what the second generation of Digital Terrestrial TV in France could be in a few years’ time.

Thanks to a collaboration with the French Tennis Federation and France Television, a world first was achieved in early June 2014, with the live broadcasting of tennis matches during the French International Tennis Tournament in Paris. Other high quality 4K off-line content has been made available for the continuity of the experiment, now that the tennis tournament has ended.

The signal is transmitted from the Eiffel Tower with an ERP of 1 kW, on UHF channel 26. The selected DVB-T2 profile is the same as the one used in the UK for HDTV, providing a maximum payload capacity of more than 40 Mbps, and capable of carrying several HD services together with a UHD service.

“We have had a long and successful partnership with Plisch in both DTTV and Digital Radio, and we are proud that such an important world first was made with our combined technologies”, says Serge MAL, TeamCast’s GM and EVP. “With several thousands of our units already in regular operation worldwide, we can gauge exactly the potential of these technologies for the next generation TV”, he adds.

The DVB-T2 modulator products will be displayed on TeamCast’s booth at IBC2014: 2B51.
