MediaTek and Japan Display Unveil Industry’s First Mobile 120Hz Display Technology

– Setting a new benchmark for mobile experience

HSINCHU, July 15, 2014 – MediaTek today unveiled the latest technology that enables 120Hz display on mobile devices, revolutionizing the high-end mobile experience. The breakthrough is made possible by combining Japan Display’s leading panel technology with MediaTek System on Chip’s (SoC) processing capabilities, resulting in a vastly superior mobile experience than ever before.

Breaking the barriers of the 60Hz refresh rate to which smartphones have been limited to date, MediaTek and Japan Display have pushed the display’s refresh rate to 120Hz, promising smooth scrolling and crystal clear view relative to a common 60Hz display. Capable of rendering content at 120 frames per second (fps), the MT6595 and MT6795 also enable the ultimate display clarity and motion fluency on 120Hz displays, improving all aspects of mobile experiences – from camera recording, video playback, and gaming, to the entire user interface (UI) experience.

Key to this breakthrough is MediaTek’s Response Time Enhancement Technology, which significantly decreases the display’s response time and reduces motion blur experienced on 60Hz display by up to 50%, bringing everything on the screen to life with crisp and smooth motion. In addition to the Response Time Enhancement Technology, MediaTek ClearMotion™ featured in the SoCs ensures full utilization of the 120Hz display with automatic frame rate conversion for content that is standard 24fps and 30fps videos and displays them in 120fps, putting the best and smoothest viewing experience in the hands of consumers around the world. These advancements are a demonstration of MediaTek’s commitment to developing high-quality solutions that foster limitless creativity and innovation.

Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the MediaTek Smartphone Business Unit, said, “MediaTek is proud to pioneer yet another innovative technology in the mobile space. 120Hz mobile displays are not only a pleasure to view and use, but they also ensure mobile users can see every aspect of detailed screen action with the maximum possible fluidity. We’re pleased to have partnered with Japan Display to revolutionize the mobile experience for consumers to experience premium technology.”
