Mobile broadband ace NSN wins Sprint deal for large-scale TDD LTE roll-out

NSN extends ties with U.S. operator, bringing global TDD LTE leadership, innovation and commercialization expertise to its network

Nokia Solutions and Networks extends its relationship with Sprint through a new contract for the deployment of TDD LTE across its 2.5 GHz spectrum, which will increase its high-speed data capacity as part of Sprint’s large-scale U.S. roll-out. Today, NSN is proving its technology maturity and leadership with a demonstration of  1.3 Gbps downlink thoughput at Sprint’s center in Burlingame, California.

Under the contract, NSN will implement its TDD LTE Radio solution with the latest LTE-Advanced-ready software capabilities and NetAct network management system. NSN will also provide professional services. NSN’s TDD LTE Radio solution features the company’s Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station using high capacity baseband platform and high bandwidth TDD LTE 8-pipe radio, which combined together will provide industry leading speed and performance to end consumers.

“As we enhance our network, we need not only a return on our invested capital, but also a partner with proven TDD LTE leadership, innovation and commercialization expertise,” said Bob Azzi, senior vice president of Network Operations for Sprint. “NSN is an ideal vendor for our deployment, which will provide our customers with increased speeds and capacity in densely populated cities. We are excited to showcase what the future might hold through a live demonstration of TDD LTE Advanced with NSN’s commercial base station.”

The demonstration that NSN – holder of the world speed record* – is conducting at Sprint’s facility in Burlingame shows a downlink throughput of 1.3 Gbps. NSN is using its commercial Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, which includes a TDD LTE 8-pipe radio module for the lab demonstration.

“Our aim is to help our customers drive a superior mobile broadband experience with the latest innovations,” said Rick Corker, executive vice president and president of North America for NSN. “NSN has a track record of delivering TDD LTE solutions, which have proven their worth time and again with tier one operators around the world. Our demonstration with Sprint at its lab is yet another testament to NSN’s TDD LTE expertise. We are delighted to provide Sprint with proven technology that will further enhance its goal of delivering a quality mobile broadband experience to its U.S. subscribers.”

With its comprehensive mobile broadband and services portfolio, NSN has been driving TDD LTE innovation in all six continents and is at the forefront of the technology’s global market development, commercialization and thriving ecosystem.

About NSN

Nokia Solutions and Networks is the world’s specialist in mobile broadband. From the first ever call on GSM, to the first call on LTE, we operate at the forefront of each generation of mobile technology. Our global experts invent the new capabilities our customers need in their networks. We provide the world’s most efficient mobile networks, the intelligence to maximize the value of those networks, and the services to make it all work seamlessly.

With headquarters in Espoo, Finland, we operate in over 120 countries and had net sales of approximately 13.4 billion euros in 2012. NSN is wholly owned by Nokia Corporation.

* NSN is the driving force behind TDD LTE innovation and commercialization, with many world firsts since 2009. These include five recent unprecedented speed records such as 1.6 Gbps throughput using the commercial Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station.

NSN has won 12 TDD LTE contracts, including the first 4G/TDD LTE network in Latin America, the first TDD LTE network in Russia and the first TDD LTE network in Saudi Arabia. Ten of these networks have already been launched, representing approximately half of all the commercial TDD LTE networks in the world. NSN is unique in that it has a TDD LTE contract in all of the six continents.

In China, we have been chosen by China Mobile to implement a significant share of its TDD LTE network. During this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, NSN received the Global TDD LTE Initiative (GTI) Market Development Award, the first ever infrastructure vendor to win this category. Additionally, we achieved record breaking upload speed, the world’s first field trial of Beyond 4G TDD LTE ASA (Authorized Shared Access) and enabled the world’s first live TV broadcast via TDD LTE.
