Mobile Marketing Association to Launch Local Council for West Africa

Receives backing from region’s major regulatory and industry players

Nigeria: November 28, 2011 – The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) today announced its plans to launch a West Africa Local Council in March 2012. Ahead of the launch, the MMA has established a local Contact Group headed by managing director at Sponge Nigeria, Dayo Elegbe and managing director at Terragon, Elo Umeh. The launch of the council has been given the full support of the Nigerian Communications Commission, The National Lottery Regulatory Commission and the Consumer Protection Council. One of the region’s primary operators, Etisalat Nigeria, has also committed whole heartedly to the establishment of mobile as a professional marketing medium.

The launch of MMA West Africa reflects the demand for a localised focus to grow a sustainable market within the region and help to protect consumers. Through the MMA’s global leadership, the West Africa Local Council will help to promote, educate, measure, guide and protect the industry in the region.

To coincide with the launch, the MMA is supporting two major mobile marketing events for the region, the Mobile Marketing Summit and the CEO, CMO and DG Summit. Held on March 8th in Lagos, the Mobile Marketing Summit will feature a host of the world’s best mobile marketers to present latest best practices, the latest mobile research and award winning campaigns appropriate to the West Africa region. Also in Lagos on March 9th, the CEO, CMO and DG Summit will focus on senior management from operators, agencies and the regulatory bodies, featuring insight from international experts on the marketing and business reasons to support the establishment of a professional mobile marketing medium, with the objective of converging opinion on the critical next steps and implementation processes needed.

“We are very excited about the impending West Africa Local Council launch and mobile marketing summits,” said Elo Umeh, joint lead of the local Contact Group and managing director at Terragon. “Having the endorsement of the three leading government bodies in Nigeria reflects the growing importance of mobile marketing in West Africa, which is becoming one of the most popular forms of consumer engagement. Brands and companies across the region are undertaking mobile campaigns to reach consumers and we are looking forward to helping them find new ideas, develop strategies and follow best practice.”

“The launch of MMA West Africa will allow companies involved in the mobile marketing ecosystem to profit from access to important information, encouraging brands and marketers to learn best practise when using mobile and teach them how to integrate it into the marketing mix to engage with their target audience in an interactive and compelling way,” said Dayo Elegbe, fellow lead of the local Contact Group and managing director, Sponge Nigeria. “The Mobile Marketing and CMO, CEO and Director General Summits will be a good starting point for the education of thought leaders throughout West Africa regarding the best practices in mobile marketing,”
