Motorola Launches EDGE(TM) Software Suite for Improved Service Assurance in the Multi-Screen Digital Home

HORSHAM, Pa., Aug 31, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ — Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MOT) announced today the launch of the Motorola EDGE(TM) Service Assurance Software Suite, providing cable and telecom operators with a family of customer care applications for the evolving home network. By deploying EDGE, operators can more efficiently activate, provision, maintain and support all broadband services in a multi-screen digital home, while simultaneously reducing their overall operational costs and accelerating the introduction of new high-revenue service offerings–all while providing a differentiated customer care experience.

The cornerstone of the new software family will be Motorola’s EDGE Manager remote management software platform (formerly Motorola NBBS). Motorola’s EDGE Manager–a field-proven application for broadband service providers, with more than 20 million devices worldwide currently under management–is a multi-protocol management solution that supports Broadband Forum’s TR-069, SNMP, OMA-DM,WIB, Telnet and HTTP DL Server protocols. EDGE Manager’s standards-based versatility gives operators expanded visibility into a range of consumer equipment (including Motorola and third-party modems, gateways, set-tops and mobile devices) and enables them to manage those devices’ usage and performance parameters from a single control point. With superior integration capabilities into the operator’s existing OSS and billing systems, EDGE Manager can efficiently scale to support tens of millions of devices in a single instance or deployment.

Motorola’s EDGE Manager offers several optional modules to assist operators with future service expansions. These modules round out EDGE Manager’s carrier-class, optimized network architecture:

  • Individual Protocol Packages: TR-069, SNMP and OMA-DM
  • DOCSIS(R) 3.0 Speed Test: available with select Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 CPE
  • WiMax Management
  • HomeNet Gateway Management: pre-built suite of diagnostics and use cases for remote management of home gateways
  • Microsoft(R) Mediaroom(TM) Set-top Management: for connection and management of proprietary Microsoft Mediaroom-enabled set-tops
  • Smartstream Terminal Data Collector: complementary set-top diagnostic aggregation service
  • Voice Management: a pre-built suite of diagnostics and use cases for VoIP deployments
  • Mobile Management: includes an integration management client for Android-based mobile devices

In addition to EDGE Manager, the EDGE software suite will include Motorola’s eCare and MotoPLYR applications. Motorola eCare is a support center application that enables HelpDesk agents to have user authorized remote access and/or remote control of customer desktops. eCare provides real-time diagnostics and delivery of scripts that can, with a push of a button, automatically reconfigure browser, email or other settings. Furthermore, Motorola’s MotoPLYR is a diagnostic application for IPTV set-tops–from both Motorola and select third-party vendors–that allows real-time self-diagnostics and reporting.

“The evolution of the digital home is placing an increased support burden on service providers as consumers migrate to advanced gateways and multi-screen services,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager, Software Solutions, Motorola Mobility. “Integrated management processes and customer service experiences need not be cumbersome, even in today’s multi-screen service environment. With our EDGE Service Assurance Software Suite, we are giving broadband and video service operators the tools needed to better manage financial and operational resources and to ensure a positive user experience for their customers.”

Service assurance is a critical part of Motorola’s vision for the Internet Era of TV. The Motorola EDGE Service Assurance Software Suite works closely with Motorola Medios as part of Motorola’s Internet Era of TV end-to-end solution set for multi-screen service management.

“With the rapid pace of innovation we’re committed to today, we knew it was critical to future-proof the support capabilities of technology migration plans now for services such as IPTV and Wi-Fi(R),” Lefkof continued. “We recognize the long-term value of a scalable, agnostic, multi-protocol solution that will enable the accelerated delivery of new media services.”

This robust software portfolio, combined with Motorola’s diverse range of Home and Mobile Device equipment, uniquely positions Motorola to add value to the user experience in the Internet Era of TV. As a cloud-based suite of applications able to communicate with all connected and mobile devices in the home, EDGE delivers a market-leading capability for monitoring, preventive maintenance and real-time support, thus arming help desk agents with visibility into home network components and the flow of content to multiple screens.
