Movicel, ZTE to Launch Commercial LTE Network in Angola

28 February 2012, Barcelona, Spain – Movicel, one of Africa’s largest GSM operators, today announced it will launch a commercial LTE network in Angola in partnership with ZTE Corporation, a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions.

LTE, also known as 4G, is the most advanced telecommunications technology currently available and it defines a clear path toward future developments. The announcement of the creation of a commercial LTE network by Movicel and ZTE in Angola shows the commitment of both companies in pioneering state-of-the-art telecommunications technology on the African continent.

The jointly built network will be based on ZTE’s latest Uni-RAN and Uni-Core solutions. As part of the project, ZTE will provide LTE equipment for key Movicel markets across the country. In addition, ZTE will upgrade Movicel’s current 3G core network to support LTE services. ZTE also will provide management and maintenance for the network.

“Movicel is dedicated to creating a truly wireless lifestyle for Angola,” said Movicel CEO Yon Junior. “This new LTE network is a breakthrough for Angola’s economy and society. We are confident we will build one of the biggest and best LTE networks in Africa.”

ZTE CEO Shi Lirong added: “It’s a great honor for ZTE to cooperate with Movicel to build an LTE network in Angola. We strive to improve our network delivery ability and service quality with a view to enhancing our presence in the African market. Movicel is one of our best partners.”

ZTE has won 30 commercial LTE contracts globally, and has deployed LTE network trials in cooperation with more than 100 operators around the globe, including H3G and Hi3G in Europe and Softbank and CSL in Asia.
