New ATIS Report Recommends Solutions to ICT’s Top Trust & Identity Challenges

WASHINGTON — ATIS today announced release of its Trust and Identity Focus Group White Paper, which contains recommendations on advancing solutions to several key ICT industry challenges. Developed by ATIS’ Trust and Identity Focus Group (T&I-FG), the white paper recommends specific actions to link existing identity systems and leverage service provider assets to address foundational weaknesses with web identity solutions.

“Currently, no single, viable solution satisfies the industry’s demanding requirements,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “A better understanding of our industry’s common trust and identity issues is essential in the defense against cybersecurity threats.”

In the new white paper, the T&I-FG notes that the current state of trust and identity is a juxtaposition of architectures designed for different purposes. Two main types of trust and identity ecosystems exist today. In one, there are rich capabilities within a single platform, but many of these capabilities rely on poorly validated identities. The other ecosystem features a limited set of mature communications capabilities that use robust, interoperable and portable identities; however, these capabilities are typically constrained to a limited number of services.

The white paper recommends five ways to bridge the gap between the two ecosystems. It also notes that many of the core technologies for trust and identity are available and in use today. The opportunities for prototyping and implementation across service providers presented in the report take advantage of longstanding relationships in the PSTN and use a combination of trust framework, single sign-on, and strong identity to address foundational weaknesses in current web solutions.

The Trust and Identity Focus Group White Paper is available at no cost in the ATIS Document Center—a leading resource for worldwide technical operations standards for communications technologies produced by ATIS Committees and Forums.
