New Globalroam’s International Roaming Softphone Gets SPIRIT Voice Engine Mobile

New Softphone Delivers HD Voice Calls on Android and iOS Devices

MOSCOW, Russia, July 29, 2013 SPIRIT DSP, the world’s #1 voice and video over IP engines provider serving more than 1 billion users in 100+ countries, announced today that Globalroam, a Singaporean innovative service provider, has licensed SPIRIT’s TeamSpirit® Voice Engine Mobile to power its new mobile client application for making cost-effective VoIP calls for consumers and enterprises using iOS or Android smartphones.

The new Globalroam Softphone, a smartphone application for Android and iOS devices, will enable subscribers to make telephone calls using data connections, either between two smartphones or from a smartphone to PSTN or mobile network, which is needed in cases when there is no opportunity to establish VoIP application-to-application connection between speakers. Globalroam has licensed SPIRIT’s TeamSpirit Voice Engine Mobile to develop its software that enables voice communications with HD Voice quality, reliability and stability that exceeds other existing OTT services that use incomplete open source products, such as Google’s WebRTC.

Licensing SPIRIT engine will help Globalroam to offer its subscribers cost-effective international roaming services, in line with the global trend of OTT services expansion, such as Skype, Viber, and others which has resulted in significant revenue loss for traditional telcos. VoIP, which has become very popular among people over the last few years, has taken a great part of telcos revenue by cutting prices, especially for roaming and long-distance calls.

Recently several OTT services, including Viber, have introduced monetization model serving PSTN-to-VoIP call termination over its softphone application. In PSTN or traditional mobile networks any international call originates with a local carrier and then is being shipped to an international carrier. This international carrier leg of the call was the most expensive due to subterranean and sub-sea cables. Today the expensive leg of the call is the termination leg. When a call is placed, the carrier will route the call to a selected VoIP ОТТ service and ask the latter to complete the call to the recipient via its application. VoIP services also require and receive a termination fee but at a much lower cost than traditional telcos.

Such OTT services as Globalroam are born to become new strong competitors to existing telcos for international mobile termination. Taking into consideration the HD quality, reliability and stability that Globalroam’s Softphone gains with the use of TeamSpirit Voice Engine Mobile, it will become an effective service for quality and cost-affordable day-to-day multinational calls for business and consumers.

“We aim to be the global leader in connecting people across diverse media, and offer our mobile phone users top voice quality to talk to their online friends,” said Tan Kum Wah Clarence, Globalroam’s Founder and CEO. “GlobalRoam’s patented technology saves costs to people who wish to reach their overseas friends, and adds convenience of contacting their online acquaintances from any location. With SPIRIT’s high quality support, we successfully integrated Globalroam Softphone with TeamSpirit Voice Engine Mobile, which works impeccably on popular smartphones and tablets, including Android and iOS, which reach 90 percent of the world’s mobile users.”
