PARIS/hong kong, July 12, 2011 – New World Telecom, a leading telecommunications service provider in Hong Kong, has selected Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU) to prepare its optical network for the introduction of blazingly fast 100-G (gigabit) technology, enabling the operator to offer a growing variety of enterprise services to the customers.

Johnny Cheung, Executive Vice President, Networks and IT of New World Telecom, said: “Alcatel-Lucent will help expand the capacity, performance and flexibility of our network to address the rapid growth in demand for high speed data transmission, especially suitable for telecommunications, banking and finance, as well as media industries in Hong Kong.”

Rajeev Singh-Molares, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the Asia-Pacific Region, said: “Demand for every kind of data service is exploding in the Asia-Pacific region, and New World Telecom is moving quickly to capitalize on this demand.  By upgrading their optical network to support very high speeds, they have taken a bold step to ensure that customers in Hong Kong can take advantage of one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful optical networks.”

At the heart of the Alcatel-Lucent-provided solution is the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), which offers high capacity and performance. The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS also gives service providers considerable flexibility by re-allocating bandwidth automatically to address any faults that occur in the network. This means that New World Telecom and its customers can count on the network to deliver exceptional reliability.

By employing the 100G-capable 1830 PSS, New World Telecom will be able to support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means the network will need no re-engineering, protecting initial investment, driving down operational costs and power consumption significantly.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is a central element of Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged Backbone solution, a key domain of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN) architecture, which is designed to cut transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
