NGMN Partners Take Next Step on 5G Vision and Requirements

Frankfurt, Germany – 26thSeptember, 2014

The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance presented latest results of its 5G Initiative in a workshop last week in Beijing. Leading global Operator, Vendor and Research representatives gathered to review the initiative’s vision and end-to-end requirements and to share their views on potential 5G solutions.

Earlier this year, the NGMN Board – CTOs from 20 leading international operators – had made the decision to focus the future NGMN activities on defining the end-to-end requirements for 5G in an industry White Paper. A global team is now working on the definition of these consolidated operator requirements intended to support the standardisation and subsequent availability of 5G from 2020 and beyond.

The NGMN 5G workshop attracted more than 100 experts and strategists from leading global NGMN Operators, Vendors and Research partners. The participants also welcomed the new NGMN partners Ziggo (Netherlands),Apple (US), and Peking University (China) who are expected to significantly contribute to the upcoming work of the NGMN 5G Initiative.

The workstream leads of the 5G Initiative presented latest results comprisingfuture business value propositions, requirement target figures, and architecture options. In an intensive round of analysis and feedback, vendors and researchersoutlined their individual 5G vision, roadmap and potential solutions.

The audience appreciated the high quality of the contributions and was impressed by the industry’s progress and achievements at this early stage. Workshop findings will now be integrated in the further development of the NGMN 5G White Paper. For the coming months, the teams agreed to continue this fruitful dialogue and know-how exchange within the global NGMN partner community.

“We are extremely happy to welcome Ziggo, Apple, and Peking University as partners of the NGMN Alliance”, said Peter Meissner, CEO of the NGMN Alliance. “They will play a vital role in our efforts to shape the vision and requirements for 5G.”

“At the NGMN 5G workshop, our partners provided a very promising outlook on potential 5G capabilities and solutions”, said Rachid El Hattachi, SVP, Deutsche Telekom AG and Steering Committee Chairman of the NGMN 5G Initiative. “We now have to make sure to continue this intensive discussion and to leverage the expertise of our partnership for the successful finalisation of the White Paper.”
