Nokia Siemens Networks enables Croatia’s first commercial 4G services

Croatia Hrvatski Telekom customers now enjoy faster downloads, response times

Hrvatski Telekom subscribers in the cities of Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek and Split can now enjoy ultra high-speed 4G mobile broadband with data speeds ten times faster than 3G. Nokia Siemens Networks has provided the radio access network and related services for the operator’s 4G services. The operator is the first to launch commercial LTE services in Croatia. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks is modernizing and expanding Hrvatski Telekom’s nationwide GSM and 3G networks.

“LTE offers people a richer mobile broadband experience with significantly faster data services for browsing, downloads and video streaming, with low latency. We in HT are intensely investing in new technologies to offer our customers in Croatia cutting-edge telecommunications services at the same time as they appear on the most developed global markets; and we are among the first in Europe and in the region. With this launch, we are modernizing our existing GSM and 3G networks to bring Croatia alongside many leading markets across the world that enjoy 4G,” said Božidar Poldrugač, member of the management board and chief technology officer, at Hrvatski Telekom. “With Nokia Siemens Networks’ global experience and strong combination of products and services, we are confident of a smooth and speedy deployment.”

Hrvatski Telekom is the first operator in Croatia to begin selling the new LTE data tariffs with revolutionary speed data transfer to private and business customers. There are two data rates, Extreme Mobile net L which includes 3 GB of data traffic for 175 HRK* per month and Extreme Mobile net XL which includes 20 GB of data traffic for 250 HRK per month. During the promotional period, until 1 October 2012, customers can use unlimited surfing on both Extreme Mobile net tariffs.

Nokia Siemens Networks is providing its Single RAN (radio access network) solution based on its award-winning, energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station. Single RAN enables Hrvatski Telekom to efficiently provide GSM, 3G and LTE to its customers. The fast introduction of LTE services is enabled by using the 1800 MHz GSM band already available to the operator. The use of the 900MHz band is extended for GSM, and also for 3G coverage expansion in rural areas. In addition to offering new 4G services and improving the quality of GSM and 3G services, the modernization will allow the operator to reduce the overall energy consumption of its network.

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks is also upgrading its NetAct network management system, to offer consolidated monitoring and optimization for Hrvatski Telekom’s GSM, 3G and 4G networks. The company is also providing support services including network implementation, hardware, software and competence development.

“With data traffic expected to increase dramatically, network evolution to next-generation technologies can help operators ensure a differentiated user experience. Hrvatski Telekom’s new LTE network will raise the bar for data services in the country. In addition, it will help the operator keep pace with the surge in smart devices and bandwidth-intensive applications and services,” said Nives Sandri, in charge of business with Hrvatski Telekom at Nokia Siemens Networks.
