Nokia Siemens Networks, Funet complete successful long-distance 100G field trial
Nokia Siemens Networks expands bandwidth for Funet across 1,000 Km
Nokia Siemens Networks and Finnish University and Research Network (Funet) have successfully concluded a field trial for simultaneously deploying 10G (gigabits per second) and 100G optical network connections for a distance of 1,000 Km. The test validates Funet’s ability to provide an efficient optical network built for the future, and affirms Nokia Siemens Networks’ leadership position in optical transport.
Funet provides network connectivity to Finnish research and higher education organizations. The trial confirmed that Funet’s installed base can be used to deliver 10G and 100G services simultaneously to meet its clients demands for bandwidth as required for working with ‘big data’ sets for scientific projects.
The 100G trial was done as a plug-and-play integration of Nokia Siemens Networks’ 100GbE transponder* with its DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) platform hiT 7300**. This allowed the use of 10G and 100G in parallel across a distance of 1,000 Km. Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management tools automated the process, enabling Funet to cost-efficiently upload the software and install the hardware.
A second test using the DWDM platform hiT 7300 and third-party 100G transponders successfully demonstrated that Nokia Siemens Networks’ standardized optical networks solution can be combined with any equipment, thereby protecting the investment in the infrastructure. In addition, the optical channel protection mechanism integrated in the DWDM platform ensured that the traffic was automatically routed to a secondary connection when the primary connection was interrupted.

On December 3, 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks and Marlin Equity Partners announced that they had reached an agreement for Nokia Siemens Networks to sell its Optical Networks business unit to Marlin Equity Partners. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013. The announcement outlined that the deal would result in the unit being established as an independent company, named Coriant, with the goal of becoming a leading provider in the optical market.
