Nokia Siemens Networks powers Tango 4G service, first in Luxembourg

Also enables country’s first personalized data tariffs

Tango, Luxembourg’s innovative telco operator, has become the country’s first to offer 4G mobile broadband services and provide personal mobile data service plans. Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its Liquid Core* network and its Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB)** system as the sole core supplier for the launch of the Tango 4G, LTE (long term evolution), services. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks implemented subscriber data management allowing the operator to provide country’s first personalized data tariffs.

“We recently launched two services that are first for Luxembourg: 4G ultra-fast data and personalized data tariffs — in addition to providing congestion-free services from our existing GSM and 3G networks,” said Didier Rouma, CEO, Tango. “Nokia Siemens Networks helped us to achieve these important goals. The company’s core network powered the launch of 4G services and to increase overall network capacity to meet the challenge of rising data traffic.”

“In addition to implementing our Liquid Core network, we implemented subscriber data management system for Tango. Without differentiating between data services, it becomes difficult for operators to efficiently manage the growth in network traffic,” said Filip Rommelaere, head of customer team Begacom Group at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our packet core network platform and subscriber data management solution help Tango efficiently manage data traffic and offer people greater choice in terms of the service they receive.”

Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its Liquid Core-based Evolved Packet Core (EPC) platform, including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway) for the operator to replace outdated equipment and launch the LTE services. In addition to providing its Mobile Softswitching (MSS) that manages traditional voice calls, Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its CSFB voice solution. The CSFB solution enabled smartphones of 4G users to fallback to GSM and 3G networks from LTE so that subscribers enjoy voice calls alongside text messaging (SMS) and ultra-fast data services.

The company’s EPC with unique 4D scaling*** expanded the packet core network capacity of the existing GSM and 3G networks. This allowed Tango to accommodate the surging data traffic and provide congestion-free data services, ensuring that the quality of service always remains the best. This also helped the operator lower its investments on additional equipment.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its subscriber data management system, including the One-NDS real-time subscriber data repository and data-less Home Location Register, and consolidated Tango’s subscriber data from across the network. The company also provided its highly scalable Policy Control Server (PCS 5000) that optimizes traffic based on a set of business rules. Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management system, NetAct, provides one consolidated view on all network elements.

Notes:

* Part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Net, Liquid Core decouples hardware and software and adds intelligent software applications that enable the core network to adapt and optimize to meet the fluid needs of subscribers, the services they use and the operational state of the network itself.

Through core virtualization, any core software application can run on COTS ATCA and ultimately other generic multi-purpose hardware. Costs are reduced by re-using existing hardware. In the core domain, the network element footprint can be reduced by 80% and energy use by up to 65%, with future improvements expected. Furthermore, intelligent broadband management delivers the best customer experience at the lowest cost, end-to-end across all network domains.

Nokia Siemens Networks has 180 Open Core System customers worldwide with over 80 live core networks. And more than 500 operators serving 1.8 billion subscribers have selected the Nokia Siemens Networks core products, which are now available on the Liquid Core platform. In 2011, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Open Core System won the category of ‘Best LTE Core Network Product’ at the LTE North America Awards.

** Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) is considered as the preferred solution for early stages of LTE/EPC network deployment. From the user perspective, it minimizes call establishment delay and supports smooth handoffs. For operators, the solution allows them to make full use of their existing networks to protect investments. CSFB allows circuit switched voice terminations to be communicated to the end-user LTE device while it is still connected to an LTE network. The solution also allows voice call originations to be communicated through the LTE system, thus reducing capacity bottlenecks to legacy access networks.

*** Nokia Siemens Networks’ EPC has unique 4D-scaling capabilities that help operators prepare for mobile broadband growth in four dimensions: data throughput handling to accommodate data traffic explosion; signaling capacity to deal with smart devices; a large number of data sessions for multiple data connections per subscriber; and service intelligence for operators’ revenue and resource optimization. Among our EPC customers are leading operators such as NTT DOCOMO and T-Mobile USA.
