Nokia Siemens Networks strengthens Single RAN portfolio #MWC12

  • Unveils two multi-radio Flexi base station products for better capacity and coverage
  • Supports simpler, more cost-efficient network rollouts

 

Nokia Siemens Networks is launching its new Flexi Compact Base Station, the industry’s smallest macro base station for 3-sector sites combining baseband, radio and integrated transport in a single enclosure*. The company believes it will allow operators to modernize GSM networks for improved energy efficiency while offering the lowest total cost of ownership. The company has also launched a 6-pipes radio module**, the latest addition to its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station family, which enables highly compact and high capacity multi-radio sites for LTE rollouts, and is ready for evolution to LTE-Advanced.

 

The products will be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2012 as part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ complete Single RAN portfolio.

 

“Smaller sites are not only more economical, but also much more energy efficient. In addition to the savings on equipment cost, operators can gain significant long-term savings in running costs due to reductions in the space required for site rental and energy consumption,” said Thorsten Robrecht, head of Network Systems product management, Nokia Siemens Networks. “These additions to our Single RAN portfolio demonstrate our ability to deliver ‘macro’ performance in ‘micro’ size, with the smallest and most compact site offerings for mobile broadband networks.”

 

Nokia Siemens Networks’ all-in-one Flexi Compact Base Station is easy to install at any type of location, requires minimum site infrastructure, and can deliver high output power. Ideal for GSM/EDGE rollouts, its multi-radio capabilities enable a smooth upgrade path to 3G and LTE, helping operators protect their network investment. Optimized backhaul*** can be provided by FlexiPacket Lite Microwave, a point-to-point microwave solution operating in both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

 

The second launch being highlighted is the 6-pipes radio module for Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. An industry first, the new radio module enables deployment of compact and high capacity 3-sector MIMO**** sites for LTE rollouts. It can also support the smallest 6-sector***** MIMO sites with just two radio modules, offering up to 80% more capacity and up to 40% more coverage compared to conventional 3-sector sites, to provide cost-efficient mobile broadband. The Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station has recently also been used for a demonstration of super-fast LTE-Advanced data speeds delivering mobile broadband at 1.4 Gbps on 100 MHz spectrum.

 

Flexi Compact Base Station will be commercially available mid 2012. The 6-pipes radio module will be commercially available early 2013.

 

Both products support Nokia Siemens Networks Liquid Radio, and can allocate and reallocate network capacity flexibly, to address high traffic growth and support volatile traffic flows.

*Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Compact Base Station is the industry’s smallest macro base station for 3-sector sites (25 kgs only) combining baseband, radio and integrated transport in a single enclosure. In addition, it provides high output power, 3×60 watts. A true multi-radio product, it is based on multicarrier power amplifier technology (MCPA) which supports multiple radio technologies using the same hardware and supports future proof cost-efficient technology evolution.

 

**A radio module is part of the base station and takes care of the radio frequency processing. The full name of the 6-pipes radio module is Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Radio Frequency (RF) module 6Tx. The product provides up to 6x40watts output power to deliver compact (25 kgs only), high capacity sites for 3-sector MIMO sites typical in LTE rollouts with a single radio module.

 

***Optimized backhaul can be provided by Nokia Siemens Networks FlexiPacket Lite Microwave, a point-to-point microwave solution in the sub-6 GHz frequency band, operating in both licensed and unlicensed spectrum. It is suited for rural and suburban backhaul as well as for 3G/4G microcell backhaul. FlexiPacket Lite Microwave seamlessly works together with the other FlexiPacket family transport products and Nokia Siemens Networks base stations.

 

****MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) refers to the use of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver to improve communication performance, and is one of the several forms of smart antenna technology.

 

*****6-sector sites almost double the capacity per site compared to conventional 3-sector sites. The 6-sector approach uses only three antennas to deploy up to six sectors (directions), and thus doubles the existing capacity of traffic channels. At the same time it increases the signaling capacity which is crucial for the use of smartphones. Nokia Siemens Networks offers a 6-sector solution that particularly allows massive and sustainable subscriber as well as traffic growth in existing networks.
