NSN and O2 win GSMA Global Mobile Award #MWC14

Nokia Solutions and Networks and O2 (Telefónica UK) were recognized for their performance and innovation in automation, winning the top prize at the GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2014. The joint entry in the “Best Mobile Infrastructure” category was for the deployment of iSON Automation for Operations. The winners were announced at the GSMA award ceremony on February 25.

Entries for the Best Mobile Infrastructure Technology category were judged on their impact on the mobile industry, innovativeness and how well they support all generations of technology, thus protecting existing investments. Judging criteria also included the extent to which the technology has changed the economics of the mobile industry, in particular for operators, as well as the speed and ease of its deployment and operations.

“Operators know that automation is the foundation of efficient network and service operations today. With our expert advantage in services and an industry-leading suite of OSS products and services, we can help our customers to automate and simplify their operations.” said Eva Elmstedt, executive vice president of Global Services at NSN. “I am very proud that our long-standing co-operation with O2 is recognized with this award. With Global Services we like to innovate where it matters the most for our customers.”

“Investment in the right type of automation is central to building O2’s capabilities that deliver efficiencies today, with an eye on making future technology management effective from the outset. We are pleased and proud to have partnered with NSN to jointly win this award and remain focused on delivering a great network experience for our customers” indicated Phil Tuohy, Head of Network Operation at O2.

NSN iSON Automation for Operations helps prevent and rapidly self-heal network outages through automated resets. It enables a complete operational transformation by reducing time-consuming manual interventions, freeing operations personnel to engage in more proactive maintenance of complex heterogeneous networks. This helps improve network availability and service quality, which in turn increases subscriber satisfaction.

With this solution, O2 was able to achieve a reduction of 10,000 manual tasks a month, resulting in significant operating expenditure savings. The solution is also helping O2 improve energy efficiency and prepare for large sporting and cultural events where traffic is at its highest.

“Now in the 19th year, the Global Mobile Awards once again showcase the outstanding level of innovation and creative products and services being developed across a diverse and growing industry,” said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd. “With more than 680 high calibre entries this year, the competition was stronger than ever and it is a significant achievement to have been honoured today. The GSMA would like to warmly congratulate all Global Mobile Awards winners and recognise all those who took part for continuing to drive mobile communications into the future.”

To learn more about outage resolution, one of the features used by O2, we welcome all network operators, customers, press, and analysts to visit NSN’s Experience Center in Hall 3, 3B10, at Mobile World Congress, Fira Gran Via, in Barcelona, Spain.
