NSN joins NYU WIRELESS research center

Will jointly organize Brooklyn 5G Summit in 2014

Nokia Solutions and Networks has made a multi-year commitment to actively participate in 5G research activities together with the NYU WIRELESS research center. NSN joins NYU WIRELESS as an affiliate sponsor and advisory board member.

NYU WIRELESS is a new research center at NYU and NYU-Poly that includes more than 20 faculty and 100 graduate students. In addition to supporting the center’s research activities, including its pioneering work on millimeter wave frequencies, NSN, together with the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly), will organize the first “Brooklyn 5G Summit”, an invitation-only meeting of technology leaders who are looking at the future of wireless communications, to be held at the NYU-Poly campus on April 24-25, 2014. The jointly sponsored summit is slated to become an annual event.

NYU WIRELESS’ work in wireless communications systems, signals, and antennas on the millimeter wave (mmwave) frequency bands could result in more than a thousand-fold increase in the data capacity of mobile devices in the coming years. This is particularly good news because demand for capacity reportedly doubles annually due to steadily increasing levels of gaming, web browsing, and music and video streaming on those devices.

“NSN has stellar research and engineering capabilities, and is an emerging leader in the mmwave future. We are pleased that our faculty and students will be working closely with the company,” said Professor Theodore (Ted) Rappaport, NYU WIRELESS director and founder. “We are delighted to have NSN’s active involvement in our center as we work to advance the 5th generation of wireless communications.”

In February this year, NYU WIRELESS completed its move into 13,500 square feet of world-class research space, with four labs for wireless research, computing, and medical applications at the NYU-Poly campus in MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn.

Professor Theodore (Ted) Rappaport holds the David Lee/Ernst Weber Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of NYU-Poly, as well as appointments in NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and in the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center.
