NSN to establish Mobile Broadband Security Center in Berlin

Contributing NSN’s expertise to improve telco security in mobile communications

Nokia Solutions and Networks has announced plans to establish a Mobile Broadband Security Center in Berlin. The goal of this initiative is to create a platform for knowledge exchange on mobile broadband-related telco security research with customers, business and research partners, and public authorities. The Mobile Broadband Security Center will be fully operational in the second half of 2014.

Mobile networks are a critical infrastructure with high impact on public welfare and safety, and as a growing number of reported incidents shows, their protection requires very dedicated efforts. End user security is becoming more and more critical as mobile communications are increasingly exposed to malware and other threats. Mobile malware grew 614% from March 2012 to March 2013 and there are more than 500 app stores that contain malicious apps*.

NSN is the market leader in protecting advanced mobile broadband networks with a track record of more than 500 successful security projects worldwide and a team of services and security experts who have earned industry-recognized certification such as CISSP, CISA, and CISM. NSN has been a long-term proponent of secure LTE networks and has established the tools and techniques to meet 3GPP recommendations. NSN has also recently launched Mobile Guard, which complements the existing Content Security solution to deliver protection right through to subscribers’ devices even if they have no anti-malware protection software.

The new Mobile Broadband Security Center will be located in NSN’s premises in Berlin. It will allow end-to-end security testing for multi-vendor mobile broadband environments. In addition to this, NSN and its partners in the security ecosystem will be able to simulate threat scenarios and assess security solutions in the center to ensure best scalability and efficiency of the solutions for meeting carrier grade requirements. Conference facilities in the center will allow NSN to share its vision for telco security in mobile broadband with customers and partners, and to drive forward implementation.

“Europe and specifically Germany are leading drivers for the highest standards of telco security and privacy protection. This in conjunction with our security expertise and significant R&D footprint in Germany makes Berlin a natural choice for us. We want to engage in a dialog with the telco security community and contribute our broad experience in protecting Mobile Broadband networks,” said Hermann Rodler, managing director of NSN in Germany. “In the Mobile Broadband Security Center, we will leverage our existing expertise and our partner ecosystem in order to increase end-to-end security in mobile broadband today and drive forward 5G security concepts and standardisation.”
